Hedman F-in headers

ok i held this off for as long as possible waiting for hedman to reply my e mails...but they haven't so i called them. and the guy told me that for my 84 TA 4 bolt cat, i would need to get P/N #68481 uncoated and #66481 coated and they include the Y-pipe and air and all the other stuff to keep it with emissions. i would like to know if that's what everyone else is using. it says it has 1 5/8 prim and stock collector. shouldn't i get a 3 in collector? also i don't care about it fitting to the stock 4 bolt cat, i can weld the y-pipe up to it till i can get a slip on cat and cat back.

I believe the "collector" they are referring to is the cat connection, since the y-pipe is included.

A couple of personal opinions:

I wouldn't weld the cat to the y-pipe. I'd wait until I could do the entire exhaust, just to maintain the system for the "right" stuff.

Also, I'd spend the extra $35 for Hooker 2055's. The y-pipe is a much better design.

i thought they ment where the header meets the y-pipe

well first i don't plan on keeping the stock system and i don't care about the y-pipe. i'm having one custom made with my cat back.

They should, if they follow convention. But, apparently they aren't. The headers in their emissions-legal kit, which includes the y-pipe, are the same as their shorties-only headers, for which they call out a 3" collector. And, for later TPI, the "stock" cat connection is 3".

I'm confused. Why are you having a custom y-pipe made with a cat-back? You can get all the needed parts as bolt-ins if you use '86-'90 TPI single-cat application parts.

And, unless you have some sweet-heart arrangement with an exhaust shop, you aren't going to get custom parts fabricated cheaper than you can buy them. Most likely, the custom fabricated parts won't be as high quality, either.

the shop i'm getting it done at will make a y-pipe and cat back for $650 and that includes labor, cat, muffler and the stainless steel pipe for the y and cat back. i just need a y-pipe that i know will fit my car for now.

but anyway, back to the topic at hand....the #66481 coated header y-pipe combo are the normal street header with the HTC on them. but what's the diff between these and the elites, and the tork steps

Why do you "need a y-pipe that you know will fit your car" if "the shop will make a y-pipe" along with the other work? Are we confusing terms here?

Y-pipe - the pipe that connects to each bank of exhaust, joining in a "Y" before the cat.

I-pipe - the "intermediate" pipe between the cat & muffler.

Is that the problem?

Elites & Tork-Step - no A.I.R. fittings or y-pipe. Not emissions legal. Not sure about O2 fitting, no mention or foot-note on that, perhaps need that collector w/fitting.

that's the info i need. i just need to make sure...the headers they told me r the same as eiltes but with the air and other emissions?

as for the other stuff, no i'm saying the right things but it may not be coming out right.

from the start. stock everything, getting hedman headers and y-pipe to fit my 4 bolt cat, then later i'll be getting a y-pipe and I-pipe made with a catco slip on cat..... if it still doesn't make any sence i'll try to draw a picture.

If you are attaching a y-pipe right away then you do not need to get a ypipe later. You only have one y-pipe on your car. You should just buy the system as a whole and get the headers (most kits come with the y-pipe), buy the cat, and the cat-back. You only need 3 components.

and last but not least (once i get the money) i'll be getting custom stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust. a 2.5in y-pipe and high flow cat and 3in cat back.

but i still need to know if on P/N #66481 if the headers r the same as if i just bought the headers and no y-pipe. same tube sizes and same size where the header meets the Y (don't know the tech term)

I have never heard that the Hedman y-pipe attaches to a 4-bolt cat without modification. At the very least, I'd think you'd have to cut the flange with a bit of the pipe intact from the stock y-pipe and weld that to the Hedman y-pipe.

From everything I've heard, the Hedman headers are the same whether you get the y-pipe or not. Details such as A.I.R/no-A.I.R., and O2/no-O2 change, however. But, they all have the same collector that will mount to their y-pipe.

That's said without ever having seen the various parts in person. It's just what I've gleaned from their website, catalog outfits such as Summit, and what people have said on this forum.

I, too, would recommend you do the exhaust once, all at the same time. Doing it in steps like you're saying would only make it that much longer before you have enough money to get to the final configuration. The interim benefits aren't that attractive.

hey Five7,

you seem to know a lot about the exaust setups. i have a bit of a problem. got these headman elite 14 guage alloy headers. wtf Y pipe will fit those? im browsing the catologs and see nothing that will fit those headers. headman only has 1 y pipe in the catologs and its for their 100 buck special headers. i dont want to pay the local shop to fab me a Y pipe. i want to run a 3 inch if that helps any
