Strong Fumes.. Should I Replace Cats? Help...
Even though my exhaust go to the rear, I still get a headache with the fumes and my clothes smell like my exhaust.
I have a 84 Z28 with no cats. Two 2.5'' that Y's into One 3 inch pipe feeding a Flowmaster that exits the very rear of the car. Installed on a 350 SBC are the Headers, 650 Holley dblpump, 190 AFRs and 286Xtreme Roller Cam/Rockers. In other words, all the OEM emissions equipment is history.
Should I install some catco cats to reduce the fumes? If so will I need to add an air pump with the air pipe?
Will Cats help even with all these mods including a 650 Holley dbp which is known to have a rich idle circuit?
Thanks...

The cats won't reduce the amt of exhaust, but will reduce a lot of the chemicals that your body finds irratating. A high flow one will only cost you like 1hp if that, so i say go for it.
I found out that the reason my exhaust on my car bothers me so much more than any other car was because the person before me gutted the cat...

Since I no longer have any original emissions equipment installed, would I have to install an air pump/pipes or just weld the cat to the pipe and go?

the AIR system is seperate. Just get a normal cat without an AIR fitting. Then just weld it up. Its that easy.

I would get a cat that does not have an AIR fitting. Capping it shut will cause the cat to not work properly and it can clog over time. My cat is capped and I know I am on bidding time.

Hey Supercharged84Z, how big was you friend’s exhaust leak? Was it just a little tick, tick, ticking type of leak or a big gapping one?
Reason I ask is I have a small leak. You can hear slight ticking sound. But I didn't think it was big enough to be the culprit. Or could I wrong that?

it was a decent sized leak, but it wasnt insanely obvious. it also depends on how sensitive you are...it could be a small leak but maybe you're just really sensitive to those types of gasses.

There was a giant rip in the side of my stock cat...not to mention the person before me gutted it. No wonder my exhaust was so loud. I was always running open headers.
Not to mention the damn fumes...Yuck
