I had hedman LTs, true 2.5 inch duals to 2 2 chamber flows.

Cops never bothered me.

But buddy had a 88 2.5 fiero with a rotting exhaust and he got a ticket. I think it was because he was driving like a jackass.

I've been pulled over for "loud exhaust" before, on my home street even.

I told the cop to get the SPL meter and test it. I knew it was loud, but it isn't in excess of the limit.

Kinda like when I was in an accident and the cop tried to make me take a sobriety test. I just told her to get the breathaliser out and test me. I hadn't had a drop that night. In fact, I rarely drink if ever. Only at weddings and such. Never had the urge.

I had hooker headers, no cat, and a 40 series flowmaster on my lo3....wasn't that loud.

My 350 with TES headers, no cat and a 3'' hooker is way louder.

Story from 30 years ago:

I was stationed overseas and my dad kept the '57 for me. I had just completed installing a hybrid 302 with high compression, solid lifter cam, single plane intake, headers, and Cherry Bomb header mufflers with pipes that exited in front of the rear tires - completed a couple of days before I left.

He drove it to work one day, and on the way home, a cop followed him (which he didn't realize). He arrives at home, parks it on the curb, gets out, and there's the cop behind him getting out of his car. When he saw Dad, he did a double-take, and said, "Oh, I thought you were some kid. Never mind."

I think that cop would have had a heart attack if I drove by. I've had complaints from neighbors that their windows and items in the house rattle when I start the car in the morning and when I drive by. Never had a problem with the cops though. I do get the evil eye a good bit...

Anything louder than stock is illegal.
On another note I drove around open headers last week and didn't get pulled over once.

I have yet to get close to a cop with my exhuast. But I am sure I will get drilled for it sooner or later. I have headers with no cat at all straight to a 30 series flowmaster. It is damn loud above 3000rpm. It is crazy at WOT around 5-6k. I set off two car alarms at a friends apt complex lastnight just idling through the parking lot. And I have to shut my car off to order food in the drive thru.

Well my car is definitely louder than stock. But even when I get pulled over for that they never get out the SPL meter and take a reading.

Last I heard you just needed a "chambered" style exhaust of the type that the factory installed. Not the exact same factory, but close enough.

(625 ILCS 5/12‑602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.
(Source: P. A. 77‑37.)

Should not be louder than the muffler orinally installed on the vehicle. Therefore, not louder than stock.
I AM a criminal justice major btw.

Oh well. They never do anything about it, my car is loud. But its not as loud as it will be once the headers go on there.

Part of the problem may be that they'd have to prove its louder than stock. But do they know how loud stock originally was? So as long as it isn't obnoxiously loud then I think they will let it go.

I drove around open headers for 3 days. Cops never pulled me over. I also went through the drive thru with open headers too, but I had to shut my car off. When I was going to get my exhaust put on, I scared the crap out of a cop that was doing paperwork in his car. His head popped up so fast and his eyes got big, but I think he knew where I was going.

I have 3 inch with a bullet muffler out to tips...I've been warned once...And my car has 3.42s and a T-350, So taching 2700 just going down the road makes some noise.... But the only time I was warned was a road check!

I got pulled over for the exhaust on my truck about a month ago. I have a 98 sonoma 4x4. I was driving home from work and a cop pulled behind me and followed for a few miles, mean while im trying to take it as easy as possible, and i had to make a turn on to a different road, and i babied it as much a possible when i accelerated but right after i seen some lights. He asked me what i had on it, and i told him a glasspack, and he told me that i needed some sort of muffler on there and wrote me a fix it ticket.

Buts its all good because i got a good guy of a cop to ok, and let me keep it the way it is.

I love to set off other car's alarms with my exhaust. I drive by other cars when I am looking for a parking at the mall, and keep it in first gear at about 2500 rpm's and it sets em all off, or at least the first stage of their shock sensors.

Having my cutout open is not even tolerable on the street, although my little cousin(17) begs me to go cruising with it open.

Luckily Texas doess't have noise requirements. Here are our requirements.

20.15 Exhaust System. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation.(No cutouts)

Muffler defined: Muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and/or turbine wheels for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from a gas or diesel engine, both of which are effective in reducing noise.

The exhaust system includes the manifolds, gaskets, exhaust lines, mufflers, resonators, tailpiping, and supporting hardware.

Motor vehicles cannot be equipped with a muffler which is perforated or which was perforated and has been repaired, either by a muffler repair jacket or by patching or in any other way. In those cases where a muffler is perforated at the time of an inspection or has been perforated and has been repaired previous to the inspection, the muffler must be replaced or the vehicle rejected.

Some pickups are equipped with a camper or hard shell cover and are sometimes used for the transportation of passengers. The tailpipe should discharge the exhaust at the rear or sides. This truck modification will be considered as a passenger compartment.

The entire structure of a motor home-type vehicle is considered a passenger compartment. The cab only of all other truck-type vehicles is considered passenger or luggage compartment.

If the vehicle is equipped with lake pipes or similar devices, such pipes or devices must be securely plated and bolted or capped.

Dual exhaust systems may be modified to single exhaust systems and single exhaust systems to dual exhaust systems, provided the modification does not violate requirements concerning exhaust emission systems.

The catalytic converter will be considered as a part of the exhaust system on all vehicles prior to 1984 year model and will be inspected only visually (if present) for leakage. On 1984 and later model light truck and passenger vehicles, the catalytic converter will be checked for presence and leakage. Flexible tubing which meets the requirements listed below may be used anywhere in the exhaust system.

NOTE: Inspection of exhaust systems covers the discharge of exhaust fumes and is not concerned with the noise level.

1. Inspection Procedure. The exhaust system shall be examined visually while the engine is running to determine efficiency of the system.

2. Inspect for and reject if:

a. Vehicle is not equipped with a muffler.

b. Any joint is loose or leaking, including manifolds. Does not include minor leakage at exhaust control valve (manifold damper or heat riser valve).

c. Manifold is cracked or broken causing leakage.

d. Holes, leaking seams, or patches on the muffler, resonators, exhaust pipe, tailpipe, or catalytic converter.

e. Exhaust system is not secured to the vehicle by mounting brackets designed for exhaust systems (wire is not acceptable).

f. Any brackets are loose, broken, or missing.

g. There is excessive vibration of exhaust line.

h. Any part of the exhaust system passes through the passenger compartment.

i. The tailpipe is broken, pinched, or eroded off to the extent to allow exhaust fumes to penetrate into the interior of the passenger compartment.

j. The tailpipe fails to discharge exhaust from the rear or sides or top of the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

NOTE: Holes in the exhaust system made by the manufacturer for drainage are not cause for rejection. The tailpipe must direct the exhaust fumes out from under the passenger compartment

I got a warning at school today.... its actually slightly quieter now since I welded the exhaust where I cut it off last summer to gut the cat (it had a 3" long pipe over the cut and clamped before).

Funny though... stock exhaust (but gutted cat) through stock manifolds. And he doesn't do anything about the loser in the Integra with the tip big enough to put my head into thats 2x louder than mine. Can't win I guess.

Our school officer is cool, This fall right after I finished my motor swap and exhaust, I pulled out the school as everyone was walking out, Got to a 20 mph roll and punched it, Shifted at 5200 broke it loose hitting second... Everyone is 5 miles could've heard it...Came back to school, school officer was like, Man shes sounds nice, You better watch out, those state boys will get on your *** for being too loud. Good times!

P.S. and the loudest car at the school is the bug I am selling...Header right into an open stinger, no baffles, no nothing... Never been pulled!
