Flames Shooting Out Headers

I just got my motor back in and trying to start it for the first time since March, and was hoping to hear it run w/ open headers but instead, I've got fire coming out the exhaust. Is this normal or do I need to check the timing again? It won't start but I could certainly roast a few marchmellows under there.

How short are your headers? What engine?

They're just the hooker 2055, not the LT's. It's a 355ci with a long, long list of mods.

i'd put some exhaust on there though, don't you have a y-pipe you could bolt up?

its normal, caught the 69 on a fire a few years ago cus of that(open headers, no dumps or anything), Didnt realize how far the flame was shooting back until it got dark, then it was to late, up in flames she went. Id highly recommend an exhaust on it

It's just unburned fuel catching fire from the heat of the headers, no biggie, but probably not safe.

Well, turns out the dist. was a 180* out so turned that around, bolted the ypipe up and turned it over once and boom, she fired right up. Now I'm thinking I may have an exhaust leak, (other than the fact there's nothing after the ypipe). As far a tightenting the ypipe, does the ball flange keep it sealed or do I need some kind of gasket for it? Also, I snugged it up pretty good, but it's not super tight like I did on the manifold, should I go back and put the squeeze on it?

Ive been thinkin of setting a controled burn in my lawn so I can work with the grass..Ya think You could drive by at about 10 MPH and get the grass going ...Get sopmething on there!! Y-Pipe wounds good..with the rest of the exhaust..Go Flowmster..Flowmaster with hookers sounds beasty!!:lala:

I never was a big fan of Flowmasters. I put a Random Technology hi flow cat followed by the SLP catback system. I also had a cut out installed in front of the cat and McCord Power plate sitting in the garage. I'm really looking forward to hearing the SLP's once it breaks in, she already has a beasty sound.

Thanks for all the compliments on the motor, I have a few pics up and list of most of the mods done to it HERE. Check it out and let me know what you think.
