2.5 inch Y pipe to 2.25 inch cat-back?

I'm putting some hedman shorties and the matching y pipe on my 305 soon, now I need a high flow cat and a cat-back. Am I going to notice any difference between a 2.5 inch cat-back or a 2.25 inch system? I'm looking at the Holley cat back, but they only make it in 2.25, and I'm not sure how I feel about necking down that quarter inch.

wow 2.25 that is pretty small. I cant say for sure that it would hurt performance just based on the fact that the y is bigger, but you might want to think about what you plan to do in the future. 2.25 will be too restrictive for most performance apps I would think. Thats my guess

Holley cat-back? If you mean the Hooker one that the only part that is 2.25 is the reducer to attach to the stock cat. The rest is 3". I would wait and just go for the full exhaust when the funds arrive. That way you don't have to worry about cutting off any reducers.

Funds really aren't the deciding issue. I'll readily spend the money on the right product. What I'm looking for is a good system for an 83-- and I'm not finding a whole lot. I also don't want to overspend on somthing that's expensive 'cause it's shiny. I want something that'll fit the factory hangers, I don't want to have to build anything. It's been suggested that I find a used iroc system, 'cause they were 3 inches all the way. Does anyone know a good 2.5 or 3 inch for an 83?

Every cat back tailored for our cars will fit the factory hangers. Hooker, dynomax, and flowmaster all make kits that will bolt right up to an 83.

I have been doing a lot of reading on the catback topic as of late and from everything I have read the Banks catback is one of the best. Here is what I know about it. All stainless (big+), 3inch avaliable with dual exit driver side tailpipes or fourth gen style crossflow exit on both sides with nice tips. apparently holds up very well. Some of the guys have been running them for 5-10 years. I saw a pic of the inside of one and it looks very well engeneered. The best thing is its only $250+50 shipping. Anyway I am exited because I just found out about this thing last night and I plan to get one real soon. A lot of the guys got theirs from http://www.enginetechandfab.com/ phone#801-265-0994 or toll free at 866-640-0994
apparently great customer service.
do a search for Banks catback and you will find a lot of info.

man I feel like I just wrote a commercial for these guys....I wonder if they'll give me a discount.

Or if you'd like you can buy my new never installed mufflex 3.5" catback that I am trying to sell for $400

Very good info there- Thanks for the tip. You're right, that does look like a tight setup, and not much more than the big, mass produced name brands. My only beef is the tips... But that's easily changed. Thanks-

I finally choose my hooker, because it wasn't very expensive and I didn't know alot of people running it (until I got on here and some other forums). I only had problems with the mounts because my car is a 2.8 car with a transplant and I choose the 305HO hooker systems because it was like $60 or $70 bucks cheaper. I think it was because of the mounting flange that was used. It is really odd, rectangular flange with 3" pipe going to oval right at the flange. Really wierd, but I found someone here with one so I kinda lucked out. It sounds really good and I like it, but I haven't had it over 3500 yet and I redline at about 6k I can't wait, but living in the city sucks!
