i've heard a few depending on exhaust that sound close at idle, but one you accelerate it's very obvious that it's a 6

The only v6 I've heard that has a similar to v8 sound is the 4.3. once it's above a certain rpm though... it's still a v6.
A 3.1 v-6 sounds like poo at any rpm beyond idle with a loud muffler.

I dont know...I get people telling me my 6 sounds like an 8....I have a hooker catback, and a hollowed out cat.

I do know a dude who has a 3.4 camaro(4th gen) that has a cam, head and intake work, a bullet style muffler instead of a cat, and no other exhaust...and this thing sounds like nothing I've ever heard before. Loud as f*ck, throaty, sounds like a beast. Better than alot of v8's with open headers....scary.

Nope, won't work... you can get close, but best bet it to make the exhaust REALLY quiet and continually loop tapes of nasty V8 sounds outside the car

Yes you can do that. But you will need a good digital recording and a very loud sound system that the volume is controlled by the gas pedal. You just need to supplement the V6 sound with a good deep throaty bass tone.

I have a 4.2 v6 in my F150 with dual flowmasters dumped before the rear axle. It sounds good at idle and below about 2500 or 3000 rpms, but once I get above that its easy to tell its a 6 (a big 6 .......but a 6 nonetheless haha). About the best you can hope for is that it sounds good at idle and under low acceleration. I recommend cutting out the cat and putting on a nice catback system (hooker, flowmaster, spintech, etc...). I have heard some great things about spintech so that's what I would recommend. Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

Oh yea baby.

They say its impossible but you can make a V6 sound like an 8.

I didn't rev pat 5000RPM but it kept its deep throaty sound all the way up. The winy 6 sound never came through. Even the down shift sounds cool. Car could easily pass for a 8 with its sound.

Its frickin neat.

see thread for details

There is a flowmaster catback with a square box (possibly a resonator) on it that is suppose to make it sound like a V8. I've never heard it though.

3.4 here...I've got a large cam, head and intake porting...car has a cut out now and sounds really, really good at idle...whiney still at higher rpms...

Though people at shows always ask what is in it at shows when I pull up. They are always surprised to see the v-6... Most think its better sounding then alot of v-8s... I think its the lope that gets them though!

I know someone who had the full resonator flomaster treatment on a 4.3 it sounded great at idle to about 1100rpm's then it sounded like the pos 4.3 it was.

a warn out, tired, out of tune, beat up, with holes in the exhaust 305 sounds better than any v6 modded or not.

Any V6 with exhaust will sound like ***, regardless of the motor mods. They just do not have a good tone at all. Anybody that says different is just lying to themselves. DO NOT put an aftermarket exhaust on a V6 car, save yourself the embarassment.

Put your car side-by-side with a V8 car equiped with the same exhaust, and yours won't sound like a V8 anymore.

Well if I'm ever in MD or you in GA, I will have to let you here my car idle with its cam. You will be singing a different tune about my v-6s tone! Heck one of these days I will get a vid or sounfd clip of it. Now I just have to figure out how to do that!

Redraif, at idle there may by one second that I am unsure, but even in that case as soon as you go about 1000 rpm, there is no denying the awful, whiny sound of a v6 with an aftermarket exhaust. No disrespect meant to you or anyone with a V6, but you cannot polish a turd and that is what a V6 sounds like.

Add boost to V6 and pump out lots of air thru the exhaust. Should sound pretty close if not like a v8.

Grand nationals sound real good at idle and have deep bassy idle with free flowing exhaust. The turbo whine muffles out some of the exhaust note tho! LOL But yeah, i seen and heard V6's that sounded like 8's but will never get as good as nice V8 tone. Close but not quite there yet. lol

The 4.3's sound decent because they are basically 2/3 of a 350. Same 4" bore. Bore is what makes the sound, number of cyls second. The 2.8s-3.4s have smaller bores (and much smaller displacements).

The purpose of this Board is to exchange technical information about 3rd gens. The purpose of this forum is to exchange such information about exhaust system.

If you need a refresher about flame throwing, re-read the Board rules (at the top of every forum).

Think about it - you're attempting to put down someone you've never even met.

This thread obviously created enough interest to produce several responses. Most of them were productive, but you shouldn't have any difficulty understanding which ones are not.

I had a pretty good idea from the subject line that there was going to be a lot of wishful thinking within. I haven't been disappointed.

I have a 87 2.8, and I put a flowmaster 80 series on it with dual outlets, and removed the cat. At idle, I had to pop the hood to prove to people it was only a 6. My friends said it sounded like a motorboat.

But as soon as I revved, or accelerated, it was obvious it was a 6. Loud as hell, but it had no real grunt.

The TA, however, is an 8, and it sounds much different on acceleration, even with a stock system minus cat.
