y-pipe to cat connection

I have a Catco converter with 3" slip-on connection, and it connects to the Y-pipe from Edelbrock (cat is slightly larger than 3" and slides over Y-pipe with a decent amount of slop). I'm looking for a slick way to handle connecting it instead of using clamps. Although clamping is simple, it's ugly, sometimes snags road junk and it leaks - and I hate getting gassed when I drive :-) . If it gets welded, I cannot easily service it. A company called Pi-Thon design (www.pi-thon.com) sells a cool gizmo meant exactly for coupling this type of setup - but's it's pretty expesive ($90, I believe).

Anyone have other options for a clean connection?

How big is the slop. What are the corresponding ID and OD of the fit? Have you looked into those band clamps?

Those connectors from pi-thon look nice--like giant compression fittings. Seems a little unnecessary though.

So I'd also suggest a preformed band clamp. Here's a 3" from Jegs, but they come in other sizes too. http://www.jegs.com//cgi-bin/ncommer...12&prmenbr=361

And if you turn the bolted side inwards and upwards, you won't be able to see it, and it'll look nice and clean.

You should also be able to find this at a good local parts store, not an AZ or Pep Boys kind of place.

Yep, that band clamp looks like the ticket! I've never seen them before, but it's just what I am after.

thanks

or you could flange it.

then you can bolt something like this in.

Nice work on the flange. I thought about that too - maybe I'm just reluctant to go do any welding. On the intermediate pipe side I put a flange on the cat so it bolts up to the factory exhaust. It was easy - I took the original cat and the new cat to a muffler shop. They cut the old flange from the old cat and welded it to the new cat. It bolts up just fine. Maybe I should consider doing the flange thing on the y-pipe side too - or maybe I'm too lazy

Did you already have those pics ready to rock, or did you take them just for this thread?

thanks

I had them ready to go. I have pics of just about every mod on the car, so i can show them to people who need a to 'see' something to get what exactly i did.

BTW, i didn't actualy weld it. i took it to a shop, and the flanged the cat and y-pipe. then i cut and fitted the cut-out, and took it to another shop to be welded.

(yes I NEED to get a welder too)
