I have a 305 TPI GTA, someone told me that straight pipe is not *** for my car. What does he mean? Is is true? I like the sound so much, but If I have too, I will put back a muffler...

I drive with a straight pipe for more than 10 years now, no problems at all.
Quiet enough at idle, quiet enough at cruising speed, and great sound when accelerating!!
No loss in power whatsoever!

Its fine on engine. Look at all the trucks out there running straight pipes. Its not my personal preference, but if you like it go w/ it.

will it hurt it? no.
will it sound good? thats a matter of prefrance.
btw. if you friend says anything along the line of "needing" backpressure.... ignore him and never take car advice from him again.

He actually said something like that... Anyway he is not really a friend...
So, I will probably put it straith pipe then! Or do you know a muffler that will make my car sound real good? Maybe even better? I have a 305 TPI all stock.

OMG lol i know what you mean when i had my 83 z i had hooker competition headers and true 2 1/4 in exauste all the way to the back all striaght piped no cats or muffs or anything.
any way every day these respected old farts that thought they know everything would tell me hey sunny your going to ruin your engine because it doesnt have enouph back pressure... blah blah blah ... then my friends would bitchg me out about it and there dad would be around and theyd be like wont that hurt your engine and there dad would lay into me saying it will cause there is no back pressure and in the back of my head im thinking ...
this guy is a complete ****ing retard.. the guy is in his thirties and im only 20 and i know more about engines.. man oh man nuthing pisses me off and annoys me more when i have these read neck old bastereds try to tell me whats going to hurt my car when i know that i am right and they are wrong but i keep quiet and let them think im a moron because i respect my elders lol.
but on a side note no it will not hurt your engine in any way the only thing it will hurt is your ears.:lala: oh yeah and a good muffler that will bolt right up in the stock location that will be cheap and make your car sound good is an 80 series flowmaster muffler.. its a direct bolt on.. thats what i am doing along with a strait piped cat.

MAF systems aren't affected by exhaust system changes as much as SD systems (like TBI) are. The reduced back pressure changes the assumed conditions of a SD system, but all you need to do is recurve the PROM.
An '88 MAF system with straight pipe will sound hillbilly, but it'll run okay.

My friend have a 88 GTA too straith pipe, and I think it sound good! But I haven't heard a 88 GTA with a Flowmaster or anything else like this. Only heard them with stock muffler or straith pipe. But if some of you say a good performance muffler would sound better than straith pipe, I may do it, just need some recommendations

I had straights with no cats, dumped at the rear on my 305, way too loud for how slow I was going!Set off car alarms @ idle I couldt imagine that on my current 350, Just driving it 20 mins with open header to the exhuast shop about killed me!

IMO, one of the coolest sounding exhaust systems is like the one I made.
Its basically a Y-pipe with a turbo-style muffler welded onto it (where the cat used to be) and then have a pipe going straight back to the rear of the passenger door, and shoot it out the side.
This thing has a powerful bark like you wouldn't beleive, but it isn't obnoxious.
Only cost me $30 to make too, but that was just a bonus

today i just took off my cat and left the pipes open where the cat was eliminating the flowmasters it sounds good really loud now i cant even hear my tires spinning lol but i still have stock exuast manifolds and then the pipes come down into one where the cat was i had this idea to do this cause my cat was rubbing on the ground whenever i went down some bad roads. in the future i plan on getting headers and just running some glass packs idk yet cause i really like my chrome tips at the back.
