Y pipe is touching the oil pan

My SLP Y pipe is juuuuuust ever so slightly touching the oil pan. We had it up on the lift, and we could just barely slip a business card between the two. You can hear it rattling a bit when it's cold.

first off, is this bad?

We tried to make some minor adjustments, but never got any more clearance. I'd really like to NOT dimple the Y pipe.

I have some old urethane bushings around, and was wondering if I could just wedge a sliver up there betweent the two. Is that half ***?

What do you guys suggest?

soudns far fetched, but can you remove the y pipe and heat it up and bend it slightly?? just a thought i know its alot of work lol.

Could just stick thicker collector gaskets in maybe?

I should've mentioned that the whole system is welded up, so it's not real easy to just drop it down.

...the collector gasket may work...

You have donut gaskets, so there goes the thicker gasket idea.

I had the same problem, but more so because of my non-stock non-F-body oil pan. Like stated above, heat it up and make it fit

Answer: New Y-pipe, unless u have an oil cooler.. The heat from the exhaust can 'cook' the oil and basically turn it into a sludge. I've seen it firsthand. I bought my car where the guy had the y-pipe up against the oilpan. The oil was pretty much a sludge (when compared to normal used oild) and the bearings were totally FU<KED. BTW, the reason i know the bearings were dead is because two days after buying the car the 400 in it blew up. Seriously, u will be happier just replacing the y-pipe.

Oh, and if u try to just say 'well, my engine runs at 195°, what would it matter if the exhaust is touching the oilpan.." Just remember that u have a cooling system that is working its *** off to keep the engine at a different temp (195° instead of something closer to 400°) than the explosion that runs it. The exhaust is WAY to hot to be transfering its heat to one of the two fluids that cools your engine and the only fluid that lubricates it.

I am really not trying to sound b|tchy. Im still kinda pissed from buying a car from the moron that I did. I was just trying to cover all the bases *this has come up before since i have been on this board and i didn't answer it thorough enough...meh*

If I am incorrect about this info, anyone, please correct me, but this is the info i got from a lot of exhaust specialists (four to be exact) when i went to ask the same question. I had to modify the y-pipe so it was ¼" from the oil pan. IMO, that's the very least u should have..

Hope this helps.

the hedmans on my 84z hit my morroso slitghtly but i have seen no ill effects my oil pressure is unchanged and the oil is still perfectly clean 1500 miles later

geez, if it were me, I would be tempted to take off the oil pan and hit it with a really big mallet until there was more room lol.

If thats the kind of connection I think it is, then maybe cut 1" peices of exhaust pipe and stick that between the collector flange and Y-pipe, then use longer bolts to tighten it up. Basically, a spacer.

while, if you didnt have slp, you could buy collectors and you get the rings. just grap some of those and some longer bolts and you should be set. but since your blessed with slp, i guess your out of luck. mine doesnt hit the oil pan, but it does hit the floor board

I have the same problem I have stock exhaust right now and the y-pipe is right against the oil pan ...and I have noticed when the engine warms up the oil pressure slowly drops down to about 15psi or maybe 1-2 psi lower than that .. could that be the reason for this ? the heat thinning the oil out ???
