Breaking in engine with ceramic headers?
ok. will be putting in the 350 soon. i plan on getting 2055's, dont know whether or not i will get ceramic coated or not yet. but i have read on hooker site that you cant break in an engine with ceramic coated headers. is this true and does anyone know why. problem is my old stock manifolds wont fit the new heads so i cant use those and if i get ceramic coated i cant use those if thats true. might just end up getting noncoated 2055's and have to try to get them coated down the road which would be a bitch cause id have to have them off the car for awhile. thanks for any info

nope, sorry, you can't break an engine in on ceramic coated headers because it will actually make the coating flake off. but you can install them after you break the cam in for 20 or so minutes, you don't have to leave them off for 500 miles or anything.

Buy junkyard manifolds for $5, break in the engine, THEN use your headers.

its the extreme heat caused by the rings breaking in to the cylinder bore, the cam breaking in, just basically the friction caused by everything in the engine breaking in, I've heard that temps can go over 2000 degrees much more than you would see every day for years

OK
I have head this before---yea --from what I have heard from others that have had the creamic headers flake off durring break in is because that the motor was run way to lean and timming , something that happens from time to time, well I would buy some headers without the coating for break in so that you get the proper jetting for the motor and so that you can pull the motor in the way it needs to be done. my 327 went 8200 rpms on the intional pull after break in try that with stock manifolds---
just my 2 centss take it or leave it
later and

the stock manifolds wont fit becuase the heads on the 350 dont have the extra bolt hole. so i guess i will try to find some at the junkyard that will fit and try to spring for the coated 2055's. i can just run the junkyard ones till i get them then, gonna take a little longer to get 700 for the coated headers. thanks for the help.

I thought this was why new engines always run on the hot side untill they are broken in, and why you can't (or at least, shouldn't) use coated headers untill then?

well if ur engines got a roller cam there is no cam break in, as for breaking in the rings i think it depends which method you use that would determine wether the headers would get damaged. the way im going to do mine is vary the RPMs up and down from 2000-4000 rpms for i think its a half an hour or so. there will probably be a lot of heat going through the headers seeing that the car isnt moving and the engines racing for a long amount of time.

its one of thoes bull**** things... just like you'll magicly bend a valve with open headers... or that synthetic oil shrinks seals....
theres a SMALL amount off effect behind it, but because people dont bother to find out why, or how... or anything... they just perpetuate the rumor.
im sure someone right now is reading this and is ready to argue about any of the 3 things above... heh.
all you have to do is ask why? how? wheres your information source? where did they/he get that info... ect.... and 99% of the time, they are getting 3rd hand info from someone else who doesnt know.
its the stupid mentality that the internet is breeding. i could go on about the human persona, ect... but really, its not like anyone reading this is understanding what im trying to say... and if you do understand it, then its somthing you probly already know anyway. :lala:

Open heads can wreck your valves, its true. Exhaust valves anyway. The rush of cold outside air can easily be enough to seriously warp them.
Just thought I would clear that up

if the coating flakes off, its because jet hot does ****ty coating...
honestly, it happens all the time.
there are alot of better places out there.
its has a "warrenty" incase it flakes off... you tell me what makes it diffrent.
once more.. you dont know, do you...
there is no diff in exhaust gas temp. i could adjust the timing to change the temp... i could make it burn loads of fuel in the header until they glow.
doesnt matter though. because thats either you being a dumbass, or not.
WHEN, (not if) the crappy jethot coating flakes off... you go get them recoated. simple.

its true that if you run with NO manifolds, until the valves heat up, when you shut them it, they wont seal properly.
ofcourse, none of that applys with even the shortest of shorty headers.

you missed the whole point....
im done trying to convince people that common sense is a good thing to use

ok, i just broke in my new engine without my brand new slp ceramic coated headers on for fear they would get too hot. i just used the stock manifolds temporarily. i have to say i didnt notice any unusual heat from the manifolds during or after the break-in. i was even able to touch them for a split second right after shutting off the car. i feel that i could easily have just done it with the headers on and saved myself a bunch of time and effort. just my 2 cents.

i have a quetion for the "cold air bending exaust valves theory". nitrous. how is it that you can inject a liquid/gas that is 127 degrees below zero and it not hurt the valve?

because by the time it gets to the exhaust valve it has already burned so its the ambient temp of the cylinder the reason why it wont bend the intake is because it is mixed in with the gas so it isnt -127 its -127+whatever the temp is of the gas and u also have the factor of underhood temp

i think hes refering more to the fact that you have a intake valve at 200* and you're suddenly spraying it with a -100 degree mist... a suddent change of over 300*s

I broke in my new engine with my freshly Jet-Hot coated SLP headers (and open y-pipe...wow that was LOUD
) on it because I didn't have any old manifolds or anything. Frankly I didn't even consider the fact that it might harm the ceramic coating, although I realize now that it should have been a consideration. Anyway, not everything was 100% perfect with the engine on initial startup so it got pretty hot during the cam breakin and the header tubes actually started to glow down by the collectors
. The only ill effects from using them during the breakin is that they lost the gorgeous shine that they had from Jet-Hot. They still look WAY better than uncoated headers, but just not as beautiful as they did when I unwrapped them after they were coated. I have not witnessed any evidence of the coating flaking off or anything like that, it just dulled. Maybe it can be polished and brought back to its former glory, I don't know, but at least it's not flaking or anything. Maybe I'm lucky, but that's my experience. I guess if you've got a pair of manis or old headers sitting around it'd make sense to throw them on, why risk it right?
