Catback system without cat??

I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but I am looking into running 3" pipe to replace the cat on a Hooker catback system. Is the muffler tuned to take backpressure from the cat?

I assume I should see a small gain from this since it's a 400 and I think I'm choking it a little. Will it get a lot louder or stay the same? -

Oh, and if I had emissions to worry about, I would'nt have asked this...

yes it will be louder, probably significantly louder due to the fact you have a 400. you're not hurting anything.

I haven't tried it (yet), but a Dynomax Bullet in place of the cat would have the effect, I'd think, of mellowing out the exhaust tone a little w/o introducing significant flow restriction.
