Cat Back Systems
I know there are probably hundreds of threads about this but I have yet to find the info. I need. I have an 83 z28 with a 355ci. I want to put a Flowmaster Catback system on it. I've looked around a little and the only ones I can find are the system's for 4th gens. What is the model number for the 40 series catback for a 3rd gen.

Flowmaster sucks anyway. You're just buying the name, and not gaining any performance. Go with Hooker.

As far as sound level and tone how do you think they compare to a 40 series for example. I just want this thing to be mind numbling loud, yet have a sweet tone to it. You know, what all of us teenagers want...lol

don't know what the model # is for the 40 series. If you want a Flowmaster catback, I just took one off my car. I don't know what series it is but it has a aggresive sound at idel, and got alot louder at WOT. Now it's not as loud as (2) 40 series Flowmasters(normally on cars that have room for 2 mufflers.) which sounds like what you want. If your interested check my profile for my e-mail address and I can send you some pics.

I've come to the conclusion that I can't have duals without a hassle. I just want something to drop in the stock location that'll sound good. I think that anything will be better than the stock one thats on it.

You are correct in your conclusion. There are plenty of good flowing, nice sounding exhaust systems that are a bolt on for our cars. Flowmaster, Hooker. Banks, Mac, Edelbrock......just to name a few. Take your pick.

I just installed the Flowmaster American Thunder series system on an '88 IROC as well as Hooker headers - I think the sound is awesome, and the install was easy. If you ask me for the money this is a great system - the design is super and it installed with no problems. I got this system after receiving an Edelbrock cat-back system and it would not install right - poor design in my opinion. I have to return it to Jegs....plus the Flowmaster system includes dual 3" tailpipes (not 2.5") with long chrome tips....very nice.

Yep - I got the system from Jegs...it ran about $330 if I can recall....a little bit more than the Edelbrock (~$280) but well worth it!

Flowmaster does not make a setup with a 40 series they make one with a 80(single in dual out cross flow) and a 30(single in/out) you can do what I did and piece together your own.
Dynomax 3" Intermediate Pipe (Part # WLK-44063) 84.99
Dynomax 3" Over-axle Pipe (Part # WLK-43248) 49.99
Flowmaster 40 Series (Part # FLO-9430419) 69.95
And all you need is a tailpipe made, but that complete exhaust minus tailpipe for around $204.93 +S&H. Also that muffler is a Delta Force 40 series muffler Summit and Jeg’s do not offer 3" in/out in Original 40 series.

Check out the SLP system. Nice sound that will not drive you insane. Also all Stainless Steel with a different look.

I think I'm going to put the same tips that a 4th gen has on the car. Does anyone have sound clips from each type of system?

Get the Flowmaster system 17233. It includes 3" piping all the way to the dual stainless steel tips. It incorporates an 80 series crossflow muffler that is as loud as any single 40 series. I doubt the 80 series is louder than dual 40's, but trust me its pretty loud with the 3" piping. I was interested in the Hooker system until I saw it on my friend's Camaro. The Hooker's dual tips are just ugly on a third gen! My Flowmaster system is a good bit louder than the Hooker too. Mated to a good header system and a direct fit high-flow Catco catalytic converter, this system lets everyone know you're coming! Get this system, you won't be dissappointed!

I just got the America Thunder #17233. $350 total from Summit. Also got the Catco high flow, direct fit converter. Will be installing in the morning. Looks awesome!
Flowmaster lists a couple of systems with different pipe diameters and outlet options.
