what NOT to do to your exhaust(pics included)

A while ago on my jeep i cut a hole in the muffler to give it a little more sound. Well the sound just got throaty and i lost a lot of power out of it. So today i decided to patch up the hole until i can get it to a welder and let him do it for real. I didnt have any sheet metal or anything else to cover the whole...so I do what any teenager does and decide to cut a pepsi can up and make some. I cut the pepsi can, turned it the other way so it didnt look like a pepsi can, and wraped it around the pipe. Then i took some electric tape and wraped around it to make it stay. I did this twice, you know...for strength lol Well.. it worked while it was just sitting there idle, so i got in to test it. Suprisingly it worked for over a mile, but the first time i stepped on it good, it went bye bye in a hurry. Creative: Yes. Stupid: Yes. Reliable: No.

Maybe i should make a tutorial on this jk But please for ***'s sake, never do this to an f-body

At least use hose clamps to hold the can on!

Yeah, duct tape may melt. You really can use some hose clamps as a temporary fix. I'd recommend using a heavier guage can (maybe a soup can) or two.

Wait, I really can't recommend using a can at all, but if you have to...

Nice!

I used a Pepsi can once too! I was trying to install an Edelbrock 500 CFM carb on my factory L69 intake on my first 1984 Firebird... I couldn't get it to sit right with the EGR valve in the way so I just took it off and chucked it! Little did I know I had to block off the hole in the Manifold where the EGR was, so I grabbed a can, cut it down to what I needed, drilled two holes, and bolted it in place! It lasted about four city blocks before I was breathing in all sorts of exhaust inside the car! I then drove home and came up with an even better idea... I went to Home Depot and bought a plate like the ones that cover the light switches or electric sockets in your house... But this one didn't have any holes, it was just a plain block off plate for the wall in a house, I drilled two bolts holes in that and installed it using hi-temp paper gasket material and hi-temp rtv goo... That didn't leak! A month later I was in the local speed shop and what else did I see hanging on the wall but an "EGR Block Off Plate" made by Moroso or someone... I felt like the biggest donkey/dunce! Of course I bought it, drove home and installed it. It even came with its own gasket and bolts!

This is just one of many of my "learning experiences" I have had when I was in my teens!

This is an example of what I used after the Pepsi can idea went out the window!

P.S.

I learned a lot by doing and still do... But like you said, we aren' t kids in Hondas thinking we're fast! However, with my first car (1987 Monte Carlo LS LG4 Completely stock aside from the Open air element) I thought I was fast then! Until I got my first Firebird... Then I got the 327 in it... Then I got it down into the high 12's... Then I got on a motorcycle... I'll stop my babbling now!

my first big learning experience was when i was 11. I was on my dirtbike and the cable to the spark plug came off. Naturally, i reached down to plug the cable back on. the dirtbike was still running when i did this. my arm felt like jello when i touched it. i havent touched a spark plug while something was on since.

my first car is pretty fast tho. its 318ci all wheel drive. so i have fun with it. its for sell tho if anyone wants it ($2800 neg/obo--very cheap)
