Using Motorcycle Exhaust

Hi,
Race bike mufflers have a nice formula 1 car like sound and they are made from titanium. I have seen some cars installed with them and they had a nice formula 1 like exhaust sound. I talked to owners and they said they gave them less performance than normal mufflers because they were too restrictive for cars but the sound was great.

Has anyone installed these type of mufflers on their cars? I'm thinking of Installing a couple of these mufflers on my car, would I lose too much power because they were made for bikes?

Thanks

I would think that F1 car sound would come more from the small-inch 14,000 rpm engine more than just the muffler.

I've heard of people using Supertrapps (sp?) on cars with some success.

I don't know why you'd want a daily driver sounding like a Formula 1 car. I think you'd lose a decent amount of power depending on the mufflers you use. Bike mufflers are usually fairly small. I know the pair that I just threw out from my ZX-6 were like 1 3/4" inlet.

Either way, I don't think you're going to get the sound you want out of 300+ cubic inches. Bike engines have cylinder bores of 2" or less and as mentioned, rev to 15-16k RPMs. Our engines have cylinder bores of 3.7-4.0" (or greater!) and spin to 5-6k RPMs.

High RPMs are not always necessary for that sound. I've seen C5 Corvettes and Lambo Gallardos with F1 sound (They had Tubi exhausts http://www.tubistyleusa.com/ ) and I think they both only pull up to 6k rpms so I believe similar sounds can be achieved by using bike exhausts without pushing over 10k rpms. I'm not too worried about performance 5-10hp less hp wouldn't mean much to me If I could get that sound.

Also the F1 sound comes only at high rpms so It can be used on a daily driver too.

Motorcycle exhaust on a car............

Too many people are worried about how to get that nice sound from their car........The best way is to get an engine that makes that noise......IE.....Get some horsepower and then the noise will come

A fast car is a loud car.......

I know that sound, thats an exotic car sound, like Ferrari or Lambo, maybe Aston Martin... The F1 sound is remarkably like that of a 15,000rpm sport bike, not a Lamborghini.

This is the best way of looking at it and I would have to agree. Add power to change the sound. Mufflers are meant to deaden the sound and not change the pitch and octaves of it. You would see a tremendous power loss with a small motorcycle exhaust. That is unless it is 2.5" to 3". You might as well go with a bullet style muffler and or resonator.

heres a tip.

most canister exhausts are constructed like this:

fiberglass matt wrapped around a preferated core with a outer can shell...

exactly like a glasspack... they ARE glasspacks.... only smaller for smaller motors....

go buy a bullet, or other small glasspack.... or better yet, if you want that "blingy show off" look, go buy a r!cer muffler.

while most guys here will knock them, there are a FEW that are 2.5 or 3" ID.... they're just glasspacks with shiny shells and big tips. just be aware that most "sport compact" mufflers have a small ID... you need atleast a 2.5" if you dont want to choke it.

The Magnaflow can mufflers have a nice sound and is available in a 3". They aren't too loud to attract too much attention, that is behind a 4 banger.

You can also look at Ti mufflers from GReddy, but welding it on isn't exactly going to happen at a standard muffler shop.

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/e...ytiexhaust.htm has some sound clips of how the cat-back exhaust sounds behind an Evo. I'm not sure if GReddy sells the muffler separately, but HKS has a Carbon/Ti combo that they do sell. Again, straight through cans...aka glasspacks.
