cut off exhaust question
So tomorrow im thinking of cutting the pipe to my exhaust. i was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. Where is the best place to cut it? (Stock 89 GTA) Would it be better to drill a hole in the muffler? Would I lose any power and how would it effect the gas mileage?
I want it loud but not too loud. Im just doing this until i get new exhaust, which comes after rims.
Thanks. -Dan

ive heard of people cutting pipes and drilling into muffler, i just never actually heard their vehicle. but anyway, as far as power and gas mileage, if you go extreme with it you will eventually lose both. but i have know idea of where u should cut it. before the muffler, and personally id want it as far back as possible.

yea the plan is to cut the pipe that runs to the muffler right before it turns into it so it wont be too loud. but i would really like to know from someone who has done it. ive heard my friends on his 96 ta but he has an actual cut off valve near the front of the exhaust

I would think that it is possible that it could do more harm than good. Although you may releave some of the pressure, could it be possible that it would hurt the scavenging effect and exhaust velocity rather than help it? The valve at the begining wouldn't hurt. I've heard of people who have gained performance by fixing an exhaust leak. Although minimal, esencially that is what you are considering.
Someone wrote a great post about how exhausts works. I just can't find it. When you read it, it will all make sense. Exept the crap about turbos running 1400 degree exhaust temps. The metal would melt at that temp. But someone else chimed in with that.

From what I've been reading, a hole will cause turbulance which makes sense why a leak would lose power. So either cut it or leave it.
1. You will be pulled over if the polic of your area are anything like here. A cut off muffler is loud and has a noticeable sound. It will be loud inside the car as well. Very loud.
2. If you do cut, try cutting slowly up the exhaust. Maybe take off the tailpipes first, then the muffler, then move up the I-pipe.

if i cut it it would be so the exhaust would be able to go straight out, so no hole.
the police arent too bad about that here. mostly b/c their fat @sses are too lazy to look under there and would rather not worry about it.
# 2 sounds like a good idea. i might give that one a try.
thanks. i'll let u know how this goes tomorrow

I did it for giggles, before my engine swap. My 3.1 had more power, +5 or 6. I hate the way the pipes stick out past the bumper, thats why i did it. It is LOUD inside the car. Louder than outside. I cut off the muffler at the bend right behind the o2 sensor. The check engine light keeps coming on at low rpm, due to the o2. Gas miles suck after. From around 28 to around 19.
I have new exaust so i didnt mind, but i wouldnt recomend it for an upgrade. Plus it sounds kinda *****... Not the image you need with a bad *** car like these imo...

I've heard some people complain about the sound being more raspy. I'm planning on removing mine. My dad has a straight pipe instead of that cat. Doesn't sound raspy at all.

Ok new plan. My dad is gonna by me a new exhaust. My friend that owns a muffler shop is gonna do 1 flowmaster with the duals coming out of it and some expensive dual tips on each side (4 tips all together). All together he said it will be $250 and said anywhere else it'd be $350. I trust him pretty good on it. Anyways, im happy

New exhaust as in new muffler and tips? Or a catback? $250 isn't an awful price but its not great for a muffler and tips.
