Real duals receipe:

1 part

2 parts fabrication and sweat.

3 parts reduced ground clearance.

YES YOU CAN RUN HEADERS

get you a set of Hooker long tubes. Call classic car industries or Year one

year one 800-932-7663

classic car industries 800-854-1280

go to Hookers website

edelbrock makes some, hell just about everybody makes shorties, mids and long tubes for 305's and 350's, your particular year model ect...

75% True 1 2 yes 3 not always depends on what you want to do. Look at Willie, Greezmonky, Me and others we used stock routing and still have very good ground clearance. If you put the mufflers under the car like many do yes your ground clearance will suffer

You can still get a sound with alot of ***** w/o going the dual exhaust route... I don't understand why everyone thinks you cant? That "rough, unsteady-idle" sound has more to do with the cam and heads you have than your exhaust system.

My Z28 has a set of Hedman shorties (68470), modified Hedman Y-pipe, and a Hooker 3" catback. My system is a real 3" system from the Y-collector to the muffler.

Now... Even on a stock-with-bolt-ons 350, my car sounds just as tough and "60s muscle" as my cousin's '63 Galaxie 500, which has dual exhaust and a 390ci big block.

Headers though, will not give you a deep, throaty sound. The muffler(s) and tips will do that for you. You will want two long, large diameter tips to get that sound. Like a pair of 3"x22" tips would work nicely.

Headers will make your exhaust sound uhh.... tinny. They will change the sound for sure though.

and if ui want that throuty sound and uneasy idle like close as i can to a old 60's muscle i need a new cam?

It all just comes down to your budget and preferences. Just search through Summit Racing and Jegs and look at what they offer for 3rd gen exhaust parts. One thing to keep in mind is to buy exhaust parts for the TPI engines, everything will bolt up the same (except for the stock catalytic converter) and you'll get more flow than if you bought exhaust parts designed for the 305 TBI.

Here's just one example of a complete exhaust system you can get from a vendor (I'll use Jegs):

Hooker 2055 Super Comp. headers w/y-pipe- http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...54&prmenbr=361
Hooker 16823 Aerochamber 3" cat-back exhaust system- http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...17&prmenbr=361
Dynomax 15622 Super catalytic converter: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...26&prmenbr=361

i like the 2 following

Hooker 16823 Aerochamber 3" cat-back exhaust system- http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommer...217&prmenbr=361
Dynomax 15622 Super catalytic converter: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommer...226&prmenbr=361

so do you think if i got the 2 following , it will add power and flow along with a little more sound as well?

tigercyberslash: your links didn't work.

Benm109,

Great advise - thanks. Here comes the old question again - if I have dual cats, should I go to a single? I live in an area with smog checks.

I'm sure someone on the boards can tell you, but I can't. I have never dealt with the stock dual cat set-up nor do I live in a state with emissions testing.
