smog pump
Well I can tell you what I did to my 88 L98. My car is a bone stocker and first thing I did was remove the cat converter, it has a pipe running to it from the smog junk. I knew I was not leaving the smog junk on the car for long so I left the pipe under the car for a short time, it just blows air into the system, I honestly could not even here it unless I stuck my head under the rocker. I guess you could plug it off but I am not sure what adverse affects it would have on the rest of the system so I left mine open for a few weeks until I got the time to remove the rest of it,,,I had no ill affects from it. I have since removed all the smog junk from my car so no more hoses and pipes cluttering up the bay. I am sure there is a solution for that small diameter pipe that runs to the cat because alot of guys on here run aftermarket high flowing cats and I beleive that most of them do not come with the connection for this tiny pipe. I could be wrong though as I am not completely up on whats new on the smog front because I have never had to go through any of that smog testing so I really don't care to clog my mind with smog knowledge

Shifty Capone is correct, there is mention of this I believe under smog pump removal, but you have to do some reading for a while to find it. I went over that myself trying to decide whether or not to remove the smog, Even though I wanted it gone no matter what I feel this stuff is worth reading over.
I don't understand it completely because I don't burn my own chips yet, but those that do make mention of removing the smog pump causing a lean condition, it can simply be remidied by burning a new chip. Some people mention installing an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and turning the pressure up slightly to compensate but I think the general consensus is to burn a chip to do it correctly. I have removed all my smog equipment but have yet to burn a chip or install an adjustable regulator. I have not noticed any ill affects, the car runs strong, but I still plan on chip tuning when I get the time. There are many people on here that do the same with no codes, no ill affects at all so I decided to do mine before I was ready to play with chips. I do feel the car acts a little lean when cold, just a hunch but nothing that causes any problems. Soon I will do chip burning and the usual bolt on stuff etc...Read over it and make your own decision, plenty of usefull info in here, goodluck, Larry.

I just removed the drive belt from the smog pump and I have no problems at all. The reason I don't remove the smog pump is becsause of smog checks every 2 years.
