82 Exahust Options
I Have an 82 Z-28, and I'm confused about my exhaust options...
I have a 305 in it now, but have a 350 in the works for the not so distant future. I want a single exhaust (maybe 3") to a single inlet, dual 2.5" outlet. I want the muffler to pretty loud, as the car is not my daily driver....
I'm uncertain if I will go with headers at this point, but if I do, I'm thinking shorties...
Also, the previous owner had removed the cat, and the air injection. I may put the cat back on to be legal, but not the smog stuff.
I was looking at several kits from flowmaster in the PAW and Summit catalogs, and most say 86 & up, or 83 & up.... Could not find a single 82??? What is the difference???
Thanks!

'82 didn't come with the single inlet/dual outlet muffler. That why aftermarket stuff is for '83-92 or whatever. Those systems should fit just fine though.
I reccomend the Hooker system for '83-85 L69 cars

i agree with airadams recommendation.
i recently purchased that exact kit and had an exhaust shop cut the bent part and the flange for the cat off and run tubing from the y pipe to the cat back.
it is a very nice system. It is relatively quiet at idle but when you step on it, the hooker really screams for all shes worth

Decide what you're going to do about headers, because that is an important aspect of the choices.
I would recommend starting at the front and finishing at the back with '86-'90 TPI single-cat application parts. Hooker 2055 headers, Catco 9118 cat, and whatever cat-back for the same application would all bolt together and fit your car (minor hanger modifications may be required). That is a good flowing 3" system that would easily support a 350.
(By the way, "'82 didn't come with the single inlet/dual outlet muffler" isn't completely true - the V6's had that type of system...

Thanks for the good advice.
I looked up the hooker 2055 headers, and they have the Air injection stuff on them, which I do not need, since I don't have the parts anyway, I couldn't put it back without a lot of $$$
Which leads me to these headers, no air, but they do have the port for the o2 sensor, they are flowmaster 16102

Any thoughts?

Hooker 2055 A.I.R. tubes: Chop them off, weld them shut. Very easy to do (ask me how I know).
Flowtechs: Small primary tubes, small y-pipe, thin tubing material, poor quality. Price not low enough for what you get. Would be okay for an unmodified 305, okay for a low RPM torquey 350, if you can get by the leak problems that are sure to develop. A good temptation to avoid.
