emission control - nevada
Hey everyone, I have a question or two for anyone who can help. I have a 1982 T/A and had my 305ci swapped out this summer for a 1978 Camaro 350ci engine.
In order to pass the emission laws in Nevada what would I need to do, what parts would I need to have in order to make it smog legal?
Thanks

Don't hold me to this cause I don't live in Nevada. I live in Ohio and currently we still don't have emissions testing. I would imagine you need to have ANYTHING that was installed from the factory in 1982 back on the engine and operating.

you might check local inspection and registration laws. an 82 in some places (like here is Missouri) can be registered as a classic thus disqualifying it from any emissions testing at all. if you can register as a classic then your free to your hearts extent. if not, get some smog legal headers and hook up the factory 305 smog equipment. it should fit the 350 with zero problems. and if you dont say anything to them at the testing station they will never know (provided its running correctly of course)

Thank you for everyone who has posted on this topic, I appreciate the input.
I have a follow up question though. I purchased this vehicle from a private owner who lived in Oregon where in certain areas, smog emissions were not enforced. As such the car had already been missing the parts which in fact made it smog legal such as the egr valve and intake manifold.
Does anyone know what components that would make the T/A smog legal?
Thank you and Merry Christmas everyone!

I live here in Vegas too. On my newer vehicles, (OBDII) they just plug in the ALDL and let it rip. As long as there is no engine codes, it would pass.
In your case, you might have to pass the sniffer test. That is if they still do that. 8 yrs ago or so that is how they did it. I would have add ball mix matches like you. As long as it burned clean, clean enough to match the original emisions, they would never stop me. They would visually look for certain items, muffler, gas cap, maybe a cat. The trick is not to offer any uneeded info to them. Just roll in like there is nothing wrong. Plus have it running in tip top shape. That sounds odd for us car guys, but you would be suprised what a set of plugs and an oil change will do to the sniffer test. Lastly, it depends on where you go. A fine oustanding garage in seven hills will look you over once or twice but go to North town off of Nellis and your money is green and thats all that matters to them.
Good luck, and keep us posted on the outcome.

Everything from your 82 305 engine should bolt up directly onto your 350 engine. That's all you need to do.
Although the 350 engine wont be much better than the 305 you have now, thanks to the tiny cam and crappy heads, you'll have a lot more torque and a better foundation to start mods. Keep in mind, the 78 engine will have the oil dipstick on the driver's side, and the 82 305 will have it on the passenger side. That's a dead giveaway to any smog guy who knows Chevy engines.
