$120 too much for the 3" y-pipe mod?

I got the hedman shorties and y-pipe and Im wanting to do the true 3" conversion on the y-pipe. I jsut dont know what bends and and all to make it myself, so I took it to a performance exhaust shop and they said $120 with the car there, parts and labor. That doesnt include a 3" test pipe I wanted them to put on as well. Does that sound about right for parts and labor? I didnt think it would be that much labor involved, but then again I am kind of a cheap ***

but i wouldnt bother doing it if you're keeping the shorties.

go buy some longtubes, then have a nice Y-pipe made.

Make sure you end up with a "Y" and not a "T". For that price, I'd be suspecious of getting the latter.

Well all hed pretty much be doing is replacing the single 2.5" pipe with 3". I already cut it where I wanted it, so the hedman y merger is still there.

But I see what your sayin five7. If I had just seen this place and when in to get a quote, Id be thinking the same thing. But all this guy does is hot rods and performance exhaust. He does a pretty good job, hes just cuttin me a break because our shop brings him some work every now and then. Plus he said he wanted the car there so he could make sure there was sufficient clearance, so Im guessin most of that $120 is labor.

So thats $120 to cut off the 2.5" pipe, bend and weld on a 3" pipe, and intall it on the car? That sounds reasonable to me.

well from what he was sayin hes just gonna buy some pre-bent pipes cuz he dont have a mandrel bender. I already cut it off where I want it, so he would cut the pre-bent pipes, get the curves and all right so its not rubbing against the frame, and weld it to the y merge.

flaming- I could probably do it myself, but I dont have a welder, and I dont know what pipes to get as far as curve radius and all. Im sure that others on here that have access and knowledge to all that would say its expensive, just like I can say its too expensive to have a motor built for you when you can do it yourself for much cheaper.

Yeah I dunno. Its like 2 mandrel bends and a bead. I sold a brand new hedman y-pipe, that I modified to a board member a few months ago and he was happy as could be. Took me like 30 minutes to mod the pipe.

there you are anesthes!! can you tell me what kind of pipe you used to make yours? Did you order pipe form summit, or did you just have some mandrel bends layin around. If I can find that out, I can probably do 90% of it myself.

I had them lying around. I use hooker for my mandrel bends. Price is fair, and they weld up great.

I've been welding for about 12 years now, and I learn more every time I have to do something, but it always helps to have decent material to work with.

Cut the y about 3/4" behind the weld before it necks down. Grind it a little to clean it, take a 3" 90* bend with a good 8" leg. Expand it out so it slips over the y-collector. Weld it up. Then just weld a 45* on the leg to go into the kitty.

Summit carries the pipes. Stay away from dynomax. The last few dynomax #'s I ordered, I was sent superceeded walker #'s which were crush bend.

I'm closing my shop at the end of next month to devote more time to law enforcement. I'm gonna build a garage at my house just big enough for 1 lift so I can still tinker, race, etc. But I won't be working on 5 projects at once like I've been the last 10 years. I've considered selling everything off and buying a Ferrari, but I'll probably hold off another year or two.

what about raduis? I was looking on summit and they had a few u-bends, but there were a few different radii (sp?). Does it really matter?

BTW: Get the Ferrari!

Yeah, you want the smallest radius possible. I think 4" is the smallest you can go with a 90* in 3".

BTW: Get the Ferrari! [/B]

Considering it. Or a vette. I dunno. Vette is prolly more practical. Problem is, I don't think I could deal with anything stock, and the ferrari would cost a fortune to mod.

That and I'm not sure what I could get for my firebird..

Dude, get a Z06. Not even a C6, a C5 Z06 is plenty. Insanely fast, and are sexy as hell.

Hate to be a pain in the *** dude, but is this the kinda pipe your talking about?

Yep, just cut it in the dead center of the J, and expand it out a little bit so it slides a hair over the Y collector. You want it just a little, because you want it TIGHT so you can weld it. Whenever you leave a gap, your not welding your glueing.
