Removing mufflers

I still have the original 23 year old mufflers on this car and they are crap but don't have money for new ones at the moment. I recently have done alot of work to my engine bay but have not fully rebuilt it recently. I purchased the car from the previous owner in September. I just got the car back from the shop and have done the following:

MSD Distributor and Blaster SS Coil
MSD 8.5mm wires
Autolite XP Performance spark plugs gapped at stock .045
Edelbrock Performer 750CFM carb
Edelbrock Performer intake manifold
Edelbrock Accudrive camshaft gear and matching aluminum cover
Edelbrock waterpump
Edelbrock Valve covers
Edelbrock Elite series air cleaner with K&N filter
Powermaster high-amp alternator
New powersteering pump
New belts
Removed all A/C and charcoal canister/emissions crap
Russell steelbraided fuel line and filter
K&N oil filter

I am just curious if I remove the mufflers, how loud would my car really be? If you think it will be loud to the point where I will get pulled over, let me know.

It will be loud, but it will also sound like ***, since you still have basically a stock engine. To get a GOOD sound with open pipes, you need heads, cam, and headers.

I wouldn't just cut it off, you won't like the sound, and it will get you in trouble.

I hate to get here and say something opposite (just don't wanna argue or start anything) but here we go!

I cut my muffler off and I put in a highflow cat with headers, and man is that crap loud.

I never get in trouble. I basically have stock cam, worked heads and headers.

I've heard cars that sounded really good with exhaust manifolds on there and open pipes!

It kinda gets loud in third when you get up in the RPM's but once you go to overdrive it all goes away.

hey xlw,if i remember my acoustics correctly it "goes away because you are actually leaving the sound behind you.
the best sounding "no muffler"sound i have heard was a mildly modified mustank with straight pipes in the stock routing.not too bad at idle but incredibly aggressive on a little free rev.
he never got pulled here in columbus, but i probably wouldn't risk it in the 'burbs or in a small town where the community needs $$$

Some cars do sound really nice with just iron manifolds and open pipes. Just this last summer I saw at the track a few bone stock 1stgen Z28s and big block Road Runners with iron manifolds and completely stock engines. Just cutouts on the pipes. They sounded AMAZING!!

But... he has a stock LG4. Have you ever heard an LG4 with no exhaust?? Its not a solid lifter 302, I'll just say that....

(No offence to you MKnight, I'm just trying to argue my point here )

Hey Guys,

I forgot to mention, with all the stuff done to my car in the list, my car still has problems on cold start up. When I first start it up the next morning it will idle right away at 1800rpm and will stay there until I mash the throttle, then it will come back down to perfect 800rpm. I can't think of why this is happening? Shouldn't the choke be perfectly adjusted from the factory on the new Edelbrock carb?

That sounds normal to me. Carbs with a choke (many racing carbs don't have a choke) have a fast-idle mechanism for when the engine is started cold. Basically, it runs the engine a bit fast, usually between 1200-1800rpm when the engine is started ice cold. This is to help the engine warm up faster, and to help keep it running when the engine is cold. The fast idle should 'kick off' and drop the engine down around normal idle speed when you tap the throttle. If the engine is still kinda cold, it may still idle a little faster, 200 rpm or so, just because the choke is still partially closed. This will go away as it warms up fully.

Its supposed to do that

Thanks, that makes alot of sense, however, my #1411 does have an electric choke.

And it sounds like your electric choke is working properly.

Ok, I am not trying to argue, so don't take it as that.

You are right I never heard any LG4's with open ehxaust.

All I have heard were 3 different LO3's and they all sounded very good. Including mine.

The best set up I heard was on my friends RussG's car (I am not totally sure what his avatar name is here, but he is on here).
He has headers with no cat and muffler. It sounds really nice and throatty and deep.

If LG4 has some work done to it, it could probably sound like that!

A set of headers will change the sound alot.
