best header 4 carbureted cars

I’ve done plenty of searches, but all I can find is information on fuel-injected cars. My question would be this what would the best headers be for a carburetor car??? I have an 84 305 if that helps you guy out. Will hooker 2055 still work; on the jegs web site they say they only fit 86-90 camaros.

yes the 2055's will work, and i highly recommend them. shorties into a 3'' y while retaining all your ground clearance. Good to go.

Agreed. The reason why you see the reference to a specific year is because of the catalytic converter mating flange. That changed over the years and the y-pipe for those headers only directly connects to those model years. However, they will still bolt to your motor and you may just have to tweak the connection between the y-pipe and cat.

Shifty If I understand you correctly the headers will bolt to my motor, and the y-pipe will bolt to the headers, but the y-pipe will not bolt right up to my cat? Basically what I would have to do is cut the old flang off the old y-pipe and weld it to the new one right? Hears another question is the y-pipe that comes with the 2055 a 3-inch pipe, it doesn’t say anything about it on the jegs web site as far as I can tell. Also is it worth it to get the coated headers? Oh one more thing were is the cheapest place to buy these headers?

The y-pipe is a 3-incher. The Catco 9118 cat is a perfect fit. Add a Hooker catback, which is also a 3-incher, and you're set to go. Coating will reduce underhood heat and protect the life of the headers. The cost may be prohibitive.

They have a different collector flange and do not have a y-pipe. IIRC there may be one in the works.

You can get SLP's too without the AIR stuff. But they cost a bit , sweet header though .

Nice to know about the 2460's . Also to add the 2055's have the biggest y pipe out of all the headers .

The 2460 y-pipe is now available, and it's an over-priced piece of garbage (sorry, Holley Corp, but you deserved that). It's made to replace the manifolds, y-pipe, and cat on LO3 cars for off-road use only. It's only 2-1/2" after the two sides join, maintaining the restriction the factory put in the exhaust system. Don't take the bait, get the 2055's.

As stated, the 2460's are not the same as 2055's. You can get 2460's with A.I.R. special order, but there really is no excuse for doing that.

Don't modify the 2055 y-pipe to fit your cat! Do as suggested and get the 2118 cat that fits right to it. The '86-'90 TPI single-cat aftermarket exhaust systems are the best single-cat systems available for our cars, stick with that stuff and you won't go wrong.

Ok so hear is the deal what I have on the car now is the stock headers, stock y-pipe that goes into the stock cat. However just this last year I took my cat out and hollowed it all out. After the cat every thing is bran new, and is in a 2 and a half-inch pipe that goes into some kind of off brand performance muffler called an Xcelerator or some like that. I do not understand why my stock cat won’t work. 125$ for just a dum cat is pretty retarded I think. I don’t have to deal with emissions so I personally don’t care about it. So will or will not my stock cat work with this application???

Put a test pipe in place of the cat.

Thast actually a great price for a performance cat. Some get as high as 400. I myself got a corvette C-5 cat it bolted right up to the SLP y pipe( it had a ball flange for mounting ) . Not sure if it would with the hookers.

The thing is, the Hooker y-pipe ends with a 3" outlet. Your stock catalytic convertor probably has an inlet of 2.25" or 2.5"... I'm not really sure how big it is because I threw my stock exhaust in the trash before taking measurements.

Obviously, a 2.25"/2.5" inlet is not going to fill a 3" outlet, thus it will not work. Either buy a 3" in/out catalytic convertor, or put a peice of pipe in its place as some have suggested.

Here is a sketch I drew in paint to better help you visualize what I am talking about:

I spent $30 for a 2-1/2' piece of 3" pipe expanded to slip over the 2055 y-pipe. Probably paid too much, but it was a shop a couple of blocks from my house, and it saved me the trouble of finding somebody to get it for me cheaper.

You can find a picture of it in the single exhaust pics thread.
