Muffler Length Myth

Something is definatly up with my TGO today. Triple posts than to not have one appear at all,

Anyway, I'm going to be running a Dynomax Bullet and can't decide on a length. 17" or 23", anyone run either? Whats the difference in sound between the two? I searched but it didn't have enough info. Thanks.

The longer muffler will be quieter.

Agreed... same goes for all 'straight thru' designs... bullets, glasspacks, chambered, etc.

its suppose to be quieter and have abit less rasp to it. but its only a few inches of added length.. and to me i dont know how much quieter it will make it. both will be loud no matter what

I have the short ones and it's like driving around with open headers.

lol! I can't wait for this to be installed...

Thanks for the replies. I'm going with the 24" as it was already ordered by my friend at Pipes Performance and well...just cause. Once good weather comes and the system gets installed, I'll post up a vid so you can hear this bad boy!

i put the the dynomax bullet race muffler with a turndown on my low mile stock red iroc and it sounds amazing. definatelly a little bassy in the car 16inch length bullet. i hear my exhaust at any rpm.

i'll be upgrading to a 3" dual system using the 16" ones, but i'll be running an x-pipe that will definitely quiet things down considerably. also, i've been trying to figure out how to run the pipes up and over the axle and out to the bumper, but haven't gotten a routing for the drivers side completely figured out yet.

I'm not sure if you have seen the kit that BMR makes which reroutes the top panhard bar a few inches, it might help with the exhaust routing. It is fairly pricey from what I remember tho.

yeah, they want like $250+.

deadbird managed to get 2.25" pipe between the panhard rod and the upper support bar, i'm gonna try to put 3" there i think.

theres one in the dual exhaust picture collection that runs two pipes in the stock location. both over the passenger side of the axle. the pipes converge into one big piece at about where the stock cat is.... acting like a crossover X pipe. that might be doable with what you have in mind

i also believe he is running shorty headers and stock exhaust routing. i'm running longtubes and have everything running pretty much strait back under the car like this:

oh i see...

how is clearance with that? i know your not all that lowered and run a slightly bigger tire than regular 16-17 inch street tires.

it'll take alot of custom bending and fabbing but it can be done... 3inch pipe is pretty big tho. but it can fit i'm sure. can u settle for dual 2.5's? those would be abit easier to fit.

clearance is decent. no, i can't settle for dual 2.5's. that's what's under the car now. no sense in redoing it if i'm stickin' with the same size...and i'm pretty good with fabbing stuff up...

It's actually 2½" tube (not that it makes any difference)..

... 3" shouldn't be much more of a clearance issue, except for the bend radius not being quite as tight. That isn't a problem going over the axle though.
Even when I had the drop springs, the original design still had enough room too keep it safe for daily use. It wasn't as tight to the brace as it is now.
I did have to relocate the rubber brake line slightly as it was uncomfotably close to the pipe (like touching it).

Mufflers with a perforated or louvred core are only good at dampening noise at lower rpm. The longer the muffler is, it just seems to raise the rpm point where the muffler brecomes worthless for reducing noise.

Restriction (reducing flow) is what actually reduces noise.

Don't count on a crossover pipe reducing noise either... it's negligible at best.

Length does matter when choosing a straight-thru style muffler (longer = quieter) but thats not as important as the placement of the muffler. That has much more effect on the sound and loudness of your exhaust system than the length of the muffler. Assume for a second that we have a car with an engine in the front, and exhaust system that goes all the way back to the rear bumper. The closer the muffler is to the exhaust ports, up near the front of the car, the quieter the exhaust system will be. The closer the muffler is to the end of the exhaust system (the tips) the louder the system will be. Even with exactly the same mufflers, manifolds, exhaust pipes, etc... the closer the muffler is to the exhaust ports, the quieter it will be.
