cut outs

ok, i have an aftermarket 3 inch cat back exhaust, and i want to install some cut outs on it. the exhaust has been in the car for some time, but i would love to add that on. can i do it? has anyone else done it? can it be done while the exhaust is on the car? and how much did it cost you money and time wise?

Where do you plan on putting the cutout? I recently put a cutout on my car. I had the cat removed and put the cutout in its place I took it to an exhaust shop and it cost $45 to remove the cat and weld the cutout in. Took 30 minutes.

I put a single 3" cutout on my exhaust. They just cut out a chunk of the 3" I-pipe up near the Y-pipe, and welded it in. Simple. Took about an hour or so, because I had them expand the 3" pipe and slip the cutout inside and weld it, so it didn't leak. Its great!

I had one installed right after the cat. The shop charged $25 and took about half an hour.

Make sure you get a steel cut-out, not a brass one..

Yes, I agree. Also, make sure its one with a cover plate thats held on with 3 nuts/wingnuts... don't get the kind with some kinda valve system, especially cable operated. They always leak. The kind with the cover plate, like I use, don't leak and they take all of 2 mins to open or close. With mine (in place of the cat) you don't even have to get under the car to open it or cap it, because its so close to the outside of the car. I love it!

cool, so it was relativly cheap for everyone to do it, and it was done while the exhaust was on the car right?

Axle/Gears: good question...
Ive had cutouts on 4 of my cars and one of my friends, so fromy my experience:

mounting it closer to the ypipe will give it a much more rough sound and be alot louder inside the car. Kinda like a truck with a broken off exhaust.

I like mine by the rear axle. A little deeper tone and a little quieter inside.

it can be done with the exhaust
still attached in as much time as you can cut and weld(if you have a sawzaw and welder)

summit sells one that goes on with clamps. and the clamps are included but the finish is raw you'd have to paint it.... which wouldnt be a big deal. that way you could do it your self, no welding needed. but i would probably like it welded on better, to insure there are no leaks.

yeah i think i would also weld them. if i can just buy one and paint and do it all myself, thatd be worth an hour of my time. but should it go towards the front or towards the rear? i kinda like it around the back of the door. any suggestions?
and would i have to jack up the car to remove the cutout?

well ya your going to have to jack up the car or something because you have to cut out a section of pipe to put the cutout on... but when i do mine i am putting it right behing the y-pipe. ive heard it gets kinda loud if its not farther back but i wont use it that much so im not worried about it being really loud.

Mount the cutout opening facing away from the center of the car, and you can reach it without having to jack the car up. And so you have a couple inches of ground clearance.

Its also there to give the flow of open headers, for more power when you are racing. Most people just use them for the sound though... I do from time to time. I use it at the track more often though.

If you want it loud, put it as far up on the exhaust (closer to the engine) as you can... the closer, the louder it will be.
