92Z Dual Cat setup questions

92Z Dual Cat setup questions

Long time lurker, just registered today. I have a few questions about a friend's 92 L98. He's noticed a loud rattle from underneath which we suspect is one of the cats going out. He's wanting to replace everything unless it's a heatshield or something simple. All I've heard about from him is headers since I put a set on my 95. My setup is Hooker Super Comp Shorties into a dynomax bullet muffler, then to a mufflex catback with a spintech muffler. We don't have emissions testing on anything but OBD2 and my setup will pass a visual in half the places around.

We're trying to figure out what the best route to go would be and need some advice from the experts. I've searched on here some, but probably not enough. Would it be best to so a single cat 3" setup similar to my 95 or leave the dual cat setup? This is on a basically stock car (K&N and flowmaster) that will stay pretty much stock except exhaust.

The dual cat idea I had was find a set of headers and y-pipe to go with the dual cat setup and run this in place of the cats.

I know it would be a little work, but it seems like a good idea. Any experience with a setup like this? I like this idea because he's thrown around the idea of running true duals later on and it seemed like this would be one thing he'd already have in case he decided to go that route. graduated in '04 with an agronomy degree! Are you still there?

He had thought about longtubes but he's wanting to stay relatively simple, cheap, and keep his groundclearance. That may or may not be possible. I know I've got shorties and an offroad y on mine and I've scraped it before. I'm just looking at options now, he definitely wants headers. I like the option of running shorties with a dual cat ypipe into the dynomax x-muffler and then maybe putting a 2-into-1 reducer to hook to his catback on it now. That way if he decides to go true duals later down the road he's got a good starting point.

I've got a feeling it's gonna be a lot cheaper to run headers with a single cat ypipe and upgrade his catback......we'll see what turns up.

keep the dual cats

I would keep the dual cats. This is how to do it. Install a set of shorties with the y-pipe. After that's done, cut the Y off the end of the pipe. Then you can tie in your true duals into your dual cats.

That is how I did mine. I have an '87 GTA that came with a sigle cat, so I scrapped my entire exhaust system. I installed SLP shorties that were Jet Hot coated with the SLP Y-pipe that I cut off Y. From there, I drove it to the shop and had the rest installed. Two cats from a '91 GTA, gutted & straight piped with 2-1/2" pipe all the way back. Total bill, parts & labor was $330, and it even included the chrome tips.

wow.....never thought of doing it like that. I think it'd be better this way since he could get a set of quality headers. Skidude, where are you? There's several places up here that do good work. I've got a set of dual pipes (dual outlet muffler) on a ZR2 Sonoma that come out behind the tires. Everyone said this was impossible to do and still have a track bar and full size spare. The guy stared at it for about 30 minutes and 2 hours later I had some pipes.
