Putting headers on a 109,000 mile engine...

I've heard before that putting headers on a higher mileage engine is a bad idea, because the increased air flow could burn a valve. Is this true?

If it isn't, I've looked at doing the Edlebrock TES system for mine. This includes a new Y pipe if I remember correctly, right? For $399, it seems like a decent deal...I'm not willing to spend almost twice that for SLP headers and an aftermarket Y pipe.

By the way, I already have a 3" Magnaflow and high-flow Magnaflow cat on the car. Thanks to anyone who can help...

put mine on with 140,000 on the clock and drove it to the muffler shop open header, it's total Make sure your car's tuned in when you install the headers and maybe richen it up a little to compensate for the exhaust flow.

Hehehehehe....I like what I'm hearing!

So, be honest...how much louder will the car be with either the Edlebrock TES or SLP headers? MA noise regs are ridiculous, and legally my 3" Magnaflow is already too loud! But I know how stupidly small the TBI exhaust manifolds are, and want to solve that problem...

Thanks to anyone who can help! Also, does the TES have a Y pipe? What do I do about the SLP?

Get your headers coated, no matter the brand.

Underhood temps are lower and the compartment looks better.

A little costly to coat but well worth the money.

Uhm, crap...if its gonna be a lot louder than just the 3" Magnaflow, then I can't do it The car is already illegal as is...I get it through only because I'm the sales manager for the dealership I bring it to for inspections!!!

I was hoping it would be like when my friend added LT headers to his '00 TA...it ended up only being louder at WOT...idle and part throttle were actually smoother, and less abrasive sounding...

Why? Well, he has an SLP Loudmouth on it, aka the most obnoxious exhaust ever created! I take it I should instead look for 350 TPI manifolds and get them ported? I can't let the car get any louder!

put them on, it won't be that HUGE of a noise increase at all, i doubt it would really be noticeable considering there's a cat and muffler in place regardless

I don't think you'll notice a noise difference. I've done headers on a dozen + cars and trucks and I only ever notice a difference in the quality of the sound. if you're still keeping the cat-back on, you'll be fine. now it will definitely sound better.....

any particular reason you're limiting to the TES and SLP headers? IMHO, the Hooker 2055's are the best shorty header/y-pipe combo available for our cars and can be had through jegs or summit for right around $375

To be honest? No particular reason. I guess I always considered Hooker products to be nothing special, but maybe I'm wrong? What makes the Hookers better than the TES or SLPs?

collector size and design. and price. also, the y-pipe is simply a piece of art.
