building my own setup...

Okay, so i'm putting together an exhaust to go with my new engine. and Ive been having a lot of trouble finding exactly what i want.

headers with a.i.r. rail and 3" outlet (i need it to pass emissions for one more year)
y-pipe with 3" in and out

I've scoured summit and other online performance shops, and I can't find anything, so i have some questions.

1. am i overlooking some shop that has the above stuff?
2. do I really need an a.i.r. rail to pass emissions?
3. I want to run a 3" main pipe, so if I can only get headers with 2.5" outs then hook them (properly) into a 3" in and out y-pipe how much would that effect the flow?

i know you can get air rail kits and put them in yourself, but i dont want to do that unless absolutely necessary. also, would an exhaust shop be able to fashion me a custom y-pipe if i can't find one?

ps it's an 84 sport coupe with a 350 (new motor).

thanks for any help.

-Tony

Re: building my own setup...

the exhaust is only as good as its smallest diameter point. as far as i kno they dont make 3" collectors on the shorty applications and the Y's are 2.5" in and merge to a 3" collector, if u want 3" collectors u gotta go long tubes. shorties are a waste compared to longtubes and will prob cost u less to run true duals. i ran mine for 320$, and thats 3 inch collectors, long tubes, mandrel sbends, 3 inch mandrel xpipe and 3 inch highflow force mufflers.

if u get a custom y make sure its mandrel bent which most shops dont do, a edelbrock/slp shorties with 2.5' collectors and 3 in Y with a 3" catback can support 450hp, u should be fine, just get ready to fork over alot of $

Physically no....the car will prolly pass without (mine passes here in Canada) but check your local regulations because there may be a visual inspection.

yeah, they dont do the under-hood check here. plus i'll be having the emissions requirements for the carbed v6, so i dont have much leeway

My 86 "V6" Firebird passed the sniffer test with flying colors after I had swapped in a 350/T5 combo and I got rid of the A.I.R. set up. I used a factory dual cat y pipe.
