hedmen hedder install

well today after fitting my dynomax blackjack shorties in and installing then removing buying a set of heman elite hedders with a matching y pipe i must say these ***** are made bigger. these have no clearance between the coolant pipe that goes to the heater core on the passenger side so i had to unbolt that and move it. next i had to raise the motor pretty high to get the driver side header in from the top unlike the dynomaxes that needed a little lift. also the clearance on the passenger side between the headers and the heater box was so small i had to put a heatshield on it which thankgod i did before. sorry no pics at the moment but everything just seems so close its crazy but i think itll work out got most of everything out of the way/protected. i also used back krylon BBQ paint then topped it with dupont high temp silver. the passenger side starting bubbling like a mother after 5 minutes of running but didnt burn off and stopped smoking and the driver side has a little bubbling barely visable so hooray.

Re: hedmen hedder install

Sometimes the motor needs to be raised a bit to make clearance to slip the headers down in the engine bay.
Gratz on the hedman install, I ran hedman shorties for a while, great product imo. The extra effort is much worth it.

Re: hedmen hedder install

Sometimes if you jack the whole car up real high and remove the starter, longtubes can slip right in from the bottom without jacking the motor up. Thats how my Dougs longtubes went in, took me about a half hour to do both sides. If anyone is looking for a good high quality ceramic coated header for about $500 then deffinately take a look at dougs.

Re: hedmen hedder install

Yup i encounted the same problems with my hedman shorty install. I also had to move the metal heater hose, i redrilled a hole further out and mounted it away. The brake lines are super close had to bend them so they were not touching. Also the oil cooler lines. Had to jack up the engine off the driver side motor mount to get it to slide in. Other then the pain in the *** install...i love these headers.

Re: hedmen hedder install

i've installed the shorties from heddmann through the bottom without having to jack up either side. They go in much smoother from below than they do from above.

Re: hedmen hedder install

wow...well not for me. I attempted that...but i dont think that was gonna happen. I really didnt try at it too long just because i had never heard of shorty header installs from the bottom.

Re: hedmen hedder install

Mine went in from the top, did the same thing relocating the coolant pipe had the same issues on the driver side but I unbolted the master cyl and the steering shaft at the geaqr box gave me just enough to let it fit. I also had the drivers side header flange too close to the crossmember for my taste. had to smooth out a weld on the crossmember.

Take out the spark plugs and remove the fan switch will help a lot.

Guess how I found that out

Re: hedmen hedder install

yea taking out the sparkplugs and i only disconnected the temp switch on the passenger side only the plug was in my way. in the end i had to jack up both side drivers side went in from the top passenger side went in from below. so far they seem like great headers. the y pipe made for the too is excellent just what i needed no gaskets with a perfect fit. hedmen is my hero. but ill probably post up pics later that i took with my phone. i ran the car for like 10 minutes the other day to let it smoke from all paint grease and what not on it. the paint started bubbling so that kinda sucks so much for that although it hasnt come off completely yet.

Re: hedmen hedder install

cool they look good and very similar to my install. Same wires too!

I do love the ball and socket flanges...i was so happy to see everything was tight and sealed no leaking. I cant wait to pick my car up tommaro with the rest of the exhaust installed!

Re: hedmen hedder install

those MSD cut to fit wires were nice. and i havent put my ypipe on permanently yet i dont want to i like it being loud and seeing as its a ball and flange if my exhaust is too quiet im just going to loosen the flanges a little so i get some more sound out of it

Re: hedmen hedder install

Ya i drove like 60 miles to the shop i had the rest of the exhaust fabbed. It was loud and yes it scared the **** out of people but it gets old fast. Also stock motors dont really sound to good with open headers. Way too much valve noise.
