Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

I have just purchased some from that guy on eBay. I read all of his feedback (100% pos+) and everyone that bought it said that the pipes sound GREAT. One guy did say that his young daughter could weld better but he said that he was satisified with them. I took a chance and in a few weeks I will install them and I will post how the sound and how they perform or hinder the car. I have stock 305 with a RPM intake and Edelbrock 600cfm carb. Hopefully soon upgrade the cam and get new heads. Need to sell some more stuff to get the heads hopefully soon.

Has anyone else bought these? And if so how do they sound?

This guy has sold a ton of these over the past year or however long he has sold them on eBay. I was going to post a very similar thread like this one before I bought these but we will see if taking the chance paid off.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

That T-intersection has got to be super restrictive. Will it work? Yes. Will the engine run? Yes. Will you get good exhaust performance? No. The exhaust flow is hitting a wall, then having to make 2 90 degree bends to get out.

Maybe if that T-intersection was some kind of smooth Y-intersection, with 2 smooth 90 degree bends, like 6" radius's, it might be worth it.

Just because they sound good dosent mean the flow good.

I can't imagine that's going to sound good. Mufflers are your friends.

Not agreeing with the design at all, but the ebay ad does say that "THERE IS A CHAMBER IN THE CENTER TO SPLIT THE FLOW". Check out the attached pic.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

Yeah, I saw that pic. The "chamber", is exactly what I'm talking about. The exhaust flow runs straight into a wall, turn 90 degrees, then flows out.

Some kind of y-pipe intersection will increase the flow of that system by a lot.

Not to mention, that pic shows there is no muffler, just an open pipe.

So who are you trying to convince? Us or you? For that price, you can't buy those pieces. They are just over the counter exhaust pieces. They aren't fourteen gauge pipe though. The piece he made is 16 and the rest will be 18. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for......it may sound ok but it won't work worth a ***** in any kind of performance application.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

I guess I am trying to convience myself (becuase I bought them). Actually I am trying to understand why this will not work. So if this is not good for performance and maybe this thread will help the next person who is thinking about buying this thinking like me that it would be good for performance.

I dont understand why this is "so restrictive" Stephen said the exhaust was hitting a wall then turning a 90 degree turn then out. The internals of a muffler do just that and maybe more so. Unless I am missing something. I have attached pics of muffler internals and one of them is a Flowmaster. It seems as if these pipes are less restrictive than using a Flowmaster muffler. So how would this hinder the performance?

I dont mean to defend these pipes but all I am trying to do is understand.
Thanks.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

If you look the Flowmaster pic, yes it is turning 90 degrees, but it is hitting the walls at 45 degree angles, and being deflected.

A simple Y connection would help a lot instead of the T intersection. That T intersection is also probably what helps acts as a "muffler". The sound is hitting a wall, then having to bounce it's way out, rather than being deflected by angles.

Replace the T with a Y, like this.

Do 2 smooth 90 degree bends after it, like these.

And end up with something like this.

It'll work as exhaust, it could just be better, and be used for performance, instead of simple function.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

This is the same size as a factory exhaust and it's also not mandrel bent! How could you expect any gains? I would imagine you could just take your muffler off your car now and that would be about the change you'd see by buying this exhaust. Just go with a 3" catback system.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

Stephen - Thanks for the expliantion, I understand what you are saying now.

Codename - I thought their would be gains due to not having the muffler would be less restriction and more flow. 3" catback system is expensive. Maybe in the future but I guess I went with something I thought would be a cheaper way to have better flow and sound.

Sounds as if I may have made a bad choice.

Thanks for your replies to me.

I didn't mean to sound threatening. I've heard a system like this before and it sounded good (on a 305 TPI).

Put it this way....down the road saving another $150 would be better for a full name brand 3" flowmaster cat-back exhaust. I want BORLA because of sound but its better if I just go for power rather than sound because when you get heads and cam....BOOM your exhaust will really wake up. So I guess all I am saying is....go big or dont go at all.

P.S. That means at least 3" and mandrel bent.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

I honestly can't say how that setup would be any better than simply removing one's stock muffler and running a Thrush Magnum after your cat converter, and over the axle.

Seems all that comes with that "kit" is a bit of extra STOCK SIZED tubing, and removal of the stock muffler ??

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

When I install this exhaust, I am afraid that it is going to be way too loud. (Due to not having a catalyic conv. and now with this ebay exhaust with no muffler) Dont get me wrong, I do want it loud, but too loud, I guess there is a fine line. Would it be possible to put a glasspack or bullet muffler where the catalylic conv. was? I just want to know if it would work there, usually the muffler is near the exhaust outlet.
My bro-in-law has a 79 Camaro and he is running the exhaust out of the headers through 2-1/2" pipe to bullet mufflers and out the side about the middle of the door. He has a bored out 350 that is pretty built up. And his is loud, I would like it to be about as loud as his. My other question is being that mine is running through original size pipe for a 1983 TA (and the TA is right now 305 with RPM intake and Edelbrock 600 cfm carb.) to the ebay exhaust splitter that separates the exhaust out the outlet pipes that are 3", would that be not as loud going through the longer pipes that are not quite as large as the 79 Camaros? Or would it be too loud without any kind of muffler or catalytic conv.? Any thoughts on this?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

It will be loud....but not as loud as the 79. The length of your exhaust will help to reduce sound decibles but that 90* wall will kill any performance. Lesson learned? You got what you paid for. Stock replacement exhaust with someones uneducated idea of hi flo. You can use most of what you got there and just add a performance muffler at the rear. You'll get decent sound (with no cat in your car) and probably better flo than that piece he sold you.

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

I once had a setup like this on my car (no muffler) and yes my car had a CAT with edelbrock headers.

It sounded obnoxious. worse then a ricecar ...... now my friends 1990 vette has whats called muffler eliminators probably just a baffle and it sounds real nice.

get ready to get alot of cops attention with that system. Especially if your running without a CAT

Re: Custom Ebay Exhaust

I do now understand, and Rob Wade mentioned getting a performance muffler and I think that is what I am going to do. But the choices...
I looked at other threads to see what people say about these
1. Flowmaster 80 series
2. Dynomax ultraflow
3. Hooker maximum flow

Does anyone have a suggestion which one would be the best sound or any others that are not on the list? For example loud, aggressive and deep sounding.

Try doing a search for audio clips. "Good sounding" is very subjective. It will also depend on what others have done to their motors/you have done to your motor.
