The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
this is my y-pipe Tuffy's auto shop made me for $500 and installed my headers..tried to get my money back or have them fix it but they said they could do nothing...pfft...ya the question i have is..is this y-pipe robbing my hp cuz my car is very slow and i think its really bad..one header is installed normally and the other 1 goes straight down into the other pipe ...bottoms out on speed bumps as u can see below...bent my headers and blew out both gaskets...heats up my oil and makes it boil..braking it down...NEVER go to tuffys....i dont no if u can see it in the pic but if he would have made the pipe a lil longer he could have bent it around the oil pan instead of goin across it....if its not robbing my hp i most likely goin to keep it on there till my 350 is done..I rather put the money into something worth it

I feel bad that you paid that much money for your y-pipe (well, not sure how much you really paid since they installed your headers at the same time)
but this is what my custom y-pipe looked like on my 86 Trans Am after they finished it. I paid $197 for the y-pipe, 3" high flow cat, and welding the intermediate pipe to the muffler and to the cat.

And this is how my little 305 sounded afterwards,

Hell yes that's robbing horsepower. Could be as much as 50 horsepower. My dad changed that "T" pipe into a true y-pipe on a customer's truck 10 years ago, and it went from 160 RWHP to 210 RWHP, and gas mileage went up 3 MPG, too.

50hp!!!that would be amazing... i knew something was wrong because i deleted all my emission...junked the cc qjet and swapped a non cc qjet with a elderbrock intake manifold and it has a mild cam...hedman headers and flowmaster 80 series with 3" piping....and it still felt stock or a lil faster

Ditto on what Kevin said. The only way the wye could be worse is if the pipe was necked down. You are losing a lot of horsepower. Just a bad job plain an simple.

I would print out this thread and show the shop the images of my y-pipe and tell them that is the way it should look.

Full 3" Y Pipe from Hooker. The best Y-Pipe I have ever seen. Perfectly tucks under the oil pan and best of all. Came with the headers.
Take a picture of this or Zephers and take that crap to small claims court

Here's my old Edelbrock headers and y-pipe. Yours reminds me of the stock 82 exhaust where two small pipes from over the axle T into another pipe that splits off to the mufflers, terrible design.
Re: The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
WOH WOH WOH! Nelapse and others, the pics you posted - is that the stock route of the pipes? If so, someone seriously ****ed mine up! I knew that mine had been redone in a really crappy way before I owned the car, but if thats how it is supposed to be routed, someone didn't know what they were doing.

How do you change the oil with that pipe? ... isn't the drain plug right above where they have the pipe routed? ......
Thats easily the most ghetto setup I've ever seen ..... sorry original poster sucks when places rip ya off like that. Maybe you can find a member here with a stock Y-pipe for cheap that you can have adapted cheaply.

Re: The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
I have seen some interesting stuff over the years but that has to be in the top ten.
The best one that I ever saw, and I still to this day 15 years later, was a guy who's exhaust system had rotted out. He took empty beer cans, cut the top & bottom off of them, then split then in half and wraped his entire mid pipe with them. After he was done with the wrapping he wraped it up tight with a coat hanger. It took for ever to cut it all off with the torch. I had stpooed counting after 60 or so cans.
I can only guess that he was on some type of drug binge and must have spent a couple of days doing it.
The things people do.....

Be happy they didn't use PVC pipe and duct tape. I've heard Tuffy's is THEE worst place for most auto parts. I'd go back in and go bezerk, you got jipped on the $500 job. They should redo it for you to keep ANY reputation "up".

Re: The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
It look like they took a OEM passenger side part and cut it up to mate to the collector and the rest. IDK why they crossed over where it did....looks farther back than the orig ones. Between the oil pan and the k-member is where my SLP, my old headman, OEM and all others cross at. You can still bottom out with it there if its of a appropriate V8 size, but if you bottomed out that low, youd scrape up more than it. Ive seen ones made for OEM manifolds that are aftermarket. Mac used to make one and someone else I cant remember. What kind of headers are they? Hedman makes an emissions header 1 5/8 primary which is fine for a 305 and a seperate y-pipe that fits nicely . They also have the same header in a non-emissions version but dont list the y-pipe as made for it. But I got the non-emissions headers and the y-pipe back when I had the 305. They worked out perfect together. I didnt get the coated headers, but they were availible. Y-pipe was $89 and jeaders were $95 from Jegs back in '98 or '99. Probably more now. The y-pipe was for their header but a basic 3 bolt flange....2 1/4 flange I think. I could get the part #s if you want them. But $500 for that is rediculous. Hell, my S-10 4.3 was only $200, and its tighter....no aftermarkets are currently availible....and its a beautiful y-merge similar to the one Zephyr has.

Why didnt you just buy the y pipe they make for the headman headers?? I mean I only paid i think like 150 or so for it. Cut out the collector and welded up a 3 inch in its place Ill have some pictures later but thats robbery. I would try and do something about it.

Re: The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
what all of you are failing to realize, is that he got a good deal.
i think its the worst y pipe ive ever seen. but, remeber, he had the headers installed.
lets add it 1-2 hours taking old exhaust off. 1 hr putting new ones on (its tuffys remeber lol) 1 hour making the shitty y pipe. plus materials plus good only knows how much time it took those idiots to make the y fit. not to mention those ***holes probably charge 80 - 100 an hour labour. plus all the other charges
he didnt get ripped. just shouldnt of took it there
i got brake pads and an inspection, 600 bucks later and i realized i should of got my friend (liscensed mechanic) to do the inspection for a case of beer, and just put the pads on myself.
lesson learned, shop around. buy tools. work on your own car...

that is some of the worst exhaust **** i have ever seen. i would throw a brick through their window. teach them a thing or two about "profit margins". make that the most expensive 500$ they ever made.
that reminds me... i got ripped off on a pint job once... where can i find a brick.
for real thoug on the the everyone gets ripped off once. i once paid 200$ for a catalytic converter and the install.
i am a dumbass.

Re: The most ghetto #%$ y-pipe ever made..period
Whoooa here let's think about this first, are you sure your headers are bent? How do you know you didn't just knock something loose so now you have a leak? Also if they are bent are you positive you can't bend them enough to get them to seal again? I had a ghetto Y pipe like that made for my S10, I was ROYALLY pissed when I got the truck back and it was SLOWER than the stock system. I also got shafted on my original Camaro Y pipe, i seriously think it was a bit worse than that one. I ended up swallowing the loss on both of those setups and now I make sure to have the car on the lift and tell them EXACTLY what i want and get a quote right there. That way when I get back I know what i have and I know what I'm paying. If I ever had a job like that done again I'de tell them to redo it or remove it period hands down. Lesson learned the hard way, exhaust shops are generally shady. I have 1 guy in town i trust now and the sad thing is he works at someone elses shop (one of the guys who shafted me on the s10 "Y" pipe). Anyways enough with the ranting life lesson here, my point is check out the headers carefully see if you didn't blow a seal or put a slight correctable bend before trashing them for new ones.
P.S. That looks like 2in pipe on the "Y" pipe, it looks like it goes from 2.5 or 2.25 down to 2 or something, SHODDY!

i'm running the flowtech headers that ur looking at and i paid 390$ canadian a bit over priced and primarys are only 1 1/2" but the install was so easy i was amazed took 1 hr get the old **** off then 45-1rh to install the new stuff i didn't notice a huge gain from them but they are for sure alot better than stock and what u have currently , i'm running 14.5 at 95 mph on all stock internals and 80ft of wheel spin

That pipe is a POS. I would be embarrassed to let a piece like that go out the shop...
