Finally have 3" true duals
What a pain in the butt. Problems out the yin yang.
First off I have hedman longtubes, hedman extensions (cut down), 3" stainless mandrel bent piping, and 2 stainless works chambered mufflers.
Talk about everything getting in the way of everything else. Turns out the Spohn trans crossmember WITH longtubes is not in the slightest bit a friendly combo. My extensions had to be cut down to get around that and the "frame".
Shorties would've been much easier and given me more ground clearance but that's not the route I wanted to go.
My X-pipe was useless. Couldn't cross the pipe from the side to the other. Had to fabricate an H-pipe that goes BETWEEN the x-member with driveshaft loop and the Spohn torque arm.
After some creative bending in the front area we were finally able to run some straight pipe. At the rear it wasn't too much of an issue to get each pipe to go over the rear axle on either side of the car. Turns out I missed taking the complete rear pic but all I did was run the 3" piping out the rear. No tips. 1 3" pipe out each side. I'm thinking of running about 2" per side of 4" pipe to bring the tone down a bit. It's a little raspy at the moment BUT it was inside a metal and concrete building what it was finally started. Echoes, reverberations, don't make for a true sound.
Here are some pics. I only have 2" of ground clearance. I'm going to have to do something about that. Let me know what you think.

Very nice fab work I like it. I wan't to do the same on my GTA but dump right before the rear end, its turning into a track queen

When I get it back I will. The car's also in for a little body work and an alignment.

That's some nice looking work.
Any worries on the pipes proximity to the hard fuel lines? What's the O.D.of your H-pipe (looks like 2-1/2") No cat's? I'd be interested in getting pics of how you came up over the axle.

Holy Shnikes....that looks badass...I cant wait to hear the chambered mufflers...I will be purchasing GMMG's exhaust in a few months here. Sounds awesome....well now we wait for sound clips.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
Wow, ive never seen it done like that. Guys seem to have good success with going around the spohn x-member and then sort of converging back along the driveshaft before splittling out over the axle. That way, you can hide a couple of inches up in the driveshaft tunnel.
But i think it looks awesome. However, exhausts are ALL about sound!!! Cant wait to hear it.

2 inches of clearance? dang, I've got 3 with my dual 3 inch lol. Yeah the spohn crossmember freakin sucks for longtubes and dual. Ripping mine out sometime this year and building a new crossmember.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
AC - I'm going to have to wrap my fuel lines in the rear. Just a little too close. I don't know off hand what the H diameter is.
WWD - It sounds pretty good. A little raspy at this point but it was inside a concrete and metal building with no real tuning as of yet. High idle. Definitely a cop magnet. I guess that's what neutral's for
online - Couldn't converge in the middle due to my mufflers. They're 30" long each. My original plan was to have them in the rear of the car but unfortunately 3" pipe doesn't bend that sharp without taking up a lot of room.
Here's the only pic I have of the exhaust coming up over the axle.
Track queen? Street legal track queen!!

Haven't decided what i'm going to do about tips yet. I'm thinking of taking off about 18" of pipe per side and bumping up to 4" in diameter. This should deepen the tone a bit.

Viprklr, one more question. The sections up and over the axle. Are those custom bent or did you use another car / app to do that? I've always wondered what other vehicles exhaust sections would make it up and over.

I have good ground clearance with mine. I'd even say I've got the best clearance of any true dual 3" setup on here. The only way to have good ground clearance is to keep the pipes tucked up in the tunnel like this....

with only 2" of clearance you will destroy all that pretty work once you start driving the car. 2" is just not enough.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
well I have not been under a car with Spohn's monstrosity hangin underneath it, so I dont know how much room there is for pipes. I would have to say that if I had that jungle jim hanging under my car I'd run a single 4" exhaust. His true duals are just totally unacceptable as far as ground clearance is concerned. I like the craftsmanship, but in my opinion, that is NOT a setup that should be created for use on the street, and I think we need to make sure people know that before they think that is the hot setup.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
Even just doing a single 4" the problem is getting around that POS crossmember. That's where a lot of ground clearance is lost. On mine I only have 3 inches at the lowest point which is right where it goes around the crossmember on the driver's side. Going to eventually make a new crossmember that should allow me to move the exhaust up 1.5 inches.

I also do believe that 2 inches is unacceptable. I plan on taking the time in figuring out a way to raise the pipes to get at least another inch. It will be hard to find that kind of room though.

Custom bent.

I agree with Cartman. There are 2 major differences between your setup and mine. 1 I have the Spohn X-member. That's the biggest difference. 2 you have a manual I have auto. The T-5 is much smaller than the 700.

I mis spoke earlier when I said I'd run a single exhaust with the Spohn cross member. I meant to say that I'd not run long tubes with that cross member, because no matter what you do with long tubes Y pipe or duals, you have to deal with the cross member. With with a complicated setup like that I'd just run the 1.75 SLP shorties and move on with life and enjoy better ground clearance. Long tubes really put you in a pinch if you dont have a good place to route the rest of the pipes.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
That's a TKO600? Sure looks tiny. My 700 fills up the whole tunnel.
I sorta agree with you on the shorties but remaining 2 separate pipes and running down the stock location. But not all of us want to run shorties. For my application I wanted LT's. I sacrifice ground clearance but then again the roads are fine where I live. All I have to watch out for is roadkill. Country roads tend to have a lot.

Looks good I am sure it sounds nice too. Ground clearance will be a huge issue for your car. Stock springs may help but try to see if you cna tuck it up higher.

How did you go about all that? Just order every single piece from sphoon and install yourself or did you have someone else do it O_o Cause once I'm done with the basics I wanna start getting upgrades over the next few years hah and suspention is on the list!

based on 1meanZ's exhaust pic, i think this system, magnaflow 3" kit for 1967-73 camaro, could be adapted, maybe cut in a couple of bends to tuck it up like his.

I have about 2.5" of clearence with me out of the car, never had anyone look wile i was in it. I scrape ALL the time. I even scrape pulling through the water hole at the local track.
I am going to redo it soon and try and get more clearence.

Actually its just hedman S-extensions, a couple 3" elbows and 2 lengths of pipe with Magnaflow mufflers. The magnaflow mufflers are awesome by the way.

2" clearance is real tight i would be a lil irritated goin over speed bumps and what not i had plenty of ground clearance before i lowered my car 2"
this is with 2 1/2 duals

I've gotten mine up to 2 1/4" ground clearance now. I don't believe i'll be able to get more than maybe a total of 2.5"
2.25" should be enough for driving but i will definitely have to avoid speed bumps.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
That was very nice work on the dual exhaust..
I know that I am going to alot of discussion on this. But, I will say it anyway.. There has been alot of discussion and we have flowtested numerous exhaust systems to see what flows better. Either (2) 3" exhaust pipes or (1) 4" pipe..
After about 2 days of studying, I have found out that (1) 4" exhaust pipe not only out flows (2) 3" pipes but just barely gets outflowed by (2) 3 1/2" duals.
But, after talking to numerous tech's from Mufflex, PYPES, Edelbrock .. 4" piping is designed for 800+ hp.. I know 3rd gen cars that are running 4" exhaust and they claim they don't notice any lack of power. If you run large exhaust it sounds great but you are probably going to lose low end torque.

I still don't have the means to record any video or sound clips. The 3 that were taken at the fest are pretty good.
Nothing like the real thing though.
Putting the rest of the exhaust on didn't really make it too much quieter than running it with the open headers.
As an update for the rest of the thread.....I did put the 4" by 18" long tips on (as you saw) and it did deepen the tone some.

I enjoy the sound. So far no cops have pulled me over for a closer listen. I'm sure that'll eventually happen as tuning progresses.
One of these days i'll have to borrow my buddy's lift to take care of the undercarriage. In the meantime it doesn't see anything less than dry clean roads.

you mod the floor pan any to tuck the mufflers up, or do they hang low. i cant imagine there being much ground clearance there at the mufflers.
i like the way you ran the pipes.
what mufflers are those?

A manual tranny (smaller) and the stock trans crossmember would've made it a lot easier for me to get ground clearance like this.
As it is, I think another inch could be had on mine. One of these days i'll have to rip into it again.

Re: Finally have 3" true duals
There has been alot of conversation about 3" dual's ~VS~ 4" single. I have checked flow test numbers on pretty much all of them before I went to Mufflex. Here are the results of our study.
Air By | 2" | 2.5" | 3" | 4"
Volume
20 | 0 .76 | 0.32 | 0.11 | 0.03
25 | 1.15 | 0.49 | 0.17 | 0.04
30 | 0.68 | 0.23 | 0.06 | 0.02
You can see that a single 4" pipe has less than 1/3 the restriction than a single 3" and would outflow almost 1/3 times as much dual 3" combined. During the test we also checked (2) 3 1/2" pipes and it was almost the same flow numbers as a single 4" pipe.
We get these numbers by calculating psi, by multiplying feet of head x .4335
