Best location for cut-out?!
I am putting on a manual (non-electric) 2 1/2" cutout. I have found a place that i think should work. It's the place/nook where the fuel filter sits, but on the other side of the car. I think it will be ok there. Or should i mount it close to the cat?
I want to cut down on the raspiness, and maximise tone. Will the location of the cat affect the sound much?
I am installing the cat as an inexpensive way to try out a different sound, not so much for performance.
Any suggestions?

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
The most common location, is the bend just before the cat. And yes, the cat will act as a "muffler", to some degree, if you put the cut out after the cat.

Exhaust cut-outs
It allows you to switch from a muffled street muffler, to open, non-muffled exhaust, for more HP.

Considering your exhaust routing is far from stock, that isn't quite what I meant.
I meant, follow the factory crossover, then just as it turns into the cat, a cut out there would give it the straightest outlet, it could get, and it would be before the cat.

No, but the stock piping still runs through that same section. Thats where most of the ones I have seen are placed on thirdgens. Allows them to tuck alittle so they dont drag and places it back far enough that your not engulfed in exhaust fumes.

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
I eventually want to run long tubes and have an electric cutout just after each header. That would sound sweet-as!
Good point about the fumes as well, jt

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
Can anyone show me time slip proof that there is ANY advantage to opening the exhaust??? I would like to see it. Just my opinion but on top of sounding terrible the small gain in horse power I dont believe will be translated to the time slip. Not to mention the expence and trouble involved in addin one of these to your system. IF you can see a significant gain from opening the exhaust, mabe you should rethink your system.

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
Im not debating that there is a gain, if you read the post closely I acknowleged that. But 10-15hp is not enough to make your car sound horrid and not see ANY E.T. gain. Most pro classes are making well over 1000hp---thats a far cry from a 350hp street car. All ORSCA classes are required to run mufflers and those guys are running(depending on class) from LOW 4's to mid 7's in the 1/8(that's LOW 7's to mid 10's in the 1/4) all on a 10" tire thru mufflers at 3000lbs minimum.

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
At the track I gained 1 tenth with the cutout open vs closed exhaust and 1-2MPH increase in speed. Not a big advantage but it does sound alot better.

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
I guess sound is in the ear of the beholder. IMO anything under 12:1 and less than 700hp needs a muffler to sound even half decent. Thats my point---1/10 and it sounds like crap. 4 or 5 tenth's might be worth it but 1???

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
Definately in the ear of the beholder cause there is nothing about a cammed open cut out LS1 that sounds like crap.

Re: Best location for cut-out?!
Got it fitted. Came up great. Pretty loud (in a destructon-derby-car kinda way). Seems to be muffled a little by the cat. Bit of a fuzz magnet though!
Sorry bout the huge second pic.
