Catalytic converter and AIR

I just got a Magnaflow replacement cat for my car (need to get it smogged, pretty sure my 22 y.o. cat won't pass)....

My question is, if I leave the AIR disconnected at the cat, will I throw the engine light? I am planning on just doing this until I can get it welded up at a muffler shop. Please respond quick, I'm trying to get this done ASAP! TIA!

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

I pulled mine off and passed with a 16 year old cat and just pulled the ses light out, but the code was for the egr before i did anything to the car
My bro had his disconnected/cut and he passed no light

The resone the air pipe is there is that older cats were not as efficiant unlike the newer ones. So they needed the air injection to keep them at proper operating temp's. Atleast this is what i read on random technologys site one time. Just leave it off but seal it and you should be fine

I used to have no cat and the AIR just emptied out by where the cat would be.....no SES light.

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

Well, I left the AIR disconnected and didn't have any problems either. All that's left is to get a smog check, and then I'm thinking of ditching the cat and putting a cutout there. I started it up without the cat and I was liking how it sounded.

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

I have a Magnaflow cat too, but it has no AIR tube, and I passed EASILY! VISUALLY, I should fail, but they didn't even bat an eye at it.

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

this may sound like a dumb question... but where does that AIR pipe run to? I just cut my cat and will put a new one on soon but I was wondering if I could just take out the AIR tube. So basically the AIR tube runs from where to the cat?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

Im pretty sure the air tube runs to the air pump, so if you are not going to use that feature, I think there is a air pump delete kit, because everyone talks about removing the air pump to free a few horses.

Re: Catalytic converter and AIR

Do you have v-belts or a serpentine belt?

If your cat is GOOD, you shouldn't need the smog pump. Visually though, no pump, no pass. It depends on if the inspector pays attention, or even cares, about anything but the results.
