Running open headers?

Is there any problem running open headers on an 84 Z28 with L69 motor?

Also, on the stock manifold, there is a pipe that comes out and plugs into the air cleaner....which would be eliminated if you put headers on. What is that pipe for?

other than it being really loud, annoying and probably costing you some power down low....I guess until you get ticketed. I'd put some mufflers on it for your neighbors sake.

shorty headers = BAD IDEA

long tubes = it will just **** people off and get you unwanted attention with police.

if you run shorty headers open in will blow super hot gas on the oil pan and thats not a great thing.

shorty headers resemble stock style manifolds in how long they are. They usually have a y-pipe that can be bought so you can hook the headers to your stock style exhaust.

long tubes are headers that exit farther down usually near that transmission. Most people just run duals off these with turndown tips in front of the axle.

Yes you can fit longtubes on a 305 because a small block chevy is a small block chevy.(for most part)
My self i picked a set of 1-5/8" headman shorties anda y-ypipe up for my 305. Unless your going 350 with decent hp later id stick with 1-5/8" primaries. IMO.

Re: Running open headers?

I ran my heddman shorties for a few days while looking for a competent exhaust shop to modify my y-pipe for me.
It's retardedly loud, not good muscle-y loud, just deafening.
And yea, saw some black soot building up on my oil pan too

Re: Running open headers?

How much does it hurt to run shorties and a y pipe? I know mustangs need full exhaust or else they suck, not even good with open LT's.

Looking at your info inder your Screen name id say you should be running long tubes and a duals......IMO, unless they are 1-7/8" or really nice 1-3/4"

Then again im guessing your running shorties because your asking lol.

It doesnt hurt anything but your wallet running a open setup off the y-pipe. The reason i say this is that the police will write you a ticket everytime they see that car on road that loud........ask me how i know

Re: Running open headers?

Well thats how my car is now because I knew I was ordering LT's just didnt know when. I know my engine needs them and it's going to get a nice pair of them soon. I was curious as to how bad it is to run just them. I want to run a true dual but it's a lot of time and probably money as opposed to exit before the axle, just dont like the dumped sound.

Re: Running open headers?

Does anyone know how good the Summit shorties are?

Also, will any Y pipe on Summit fit, if it's made for the small blocks?

And do they make a Flowmaster Super 44 that would fit, since the muffler has to be mounted transverse?
