Big QUESTION for everyone???
OK my question is this, I have a 84' Camaro Z28 with a 350, My uncle has a 69' Camarro SS. His Exhaust sounds very deep and rusty sound like most old cars do, my 350 sounds throaty but not anything like his 350, he has the original engine and hardly any mods. So why does his 69' sound more loud then my newer 350, is it because of age or something im missing. please let me know.

i would gander to say his exhaust is nonrestrictive and urs is... Maybe he has a diff cam. Lots of stuff can decide the change. I need to get a vid of mine. Mine actually has that raspy sound to it, and I still gotta get headers for it. I have the stock manifolds right now

I can take some pictures of my engine and the exhaust and maybe that will give you a better idea of what i have as i don't know all the parts on it.

hmmm well what is 350 from. When was it built? And yes pics may help to figure out your problem. 84 350s dont have that much power anyways. lol nor does my 88.

Re: Big QUESTION for everyone???
well the 69 camaro is an entirely different animal. I don't know the exact cam specs but stock you can detect a slight lope to the engine, so its got some decent lift. secondly they came stock with 2.02 heads which are very non-restrictive compared to third gen 1.94 heads. esentially, they're moving alot of air in and through the engine.
as for the exhaust side, the 69 comes stock with decent headers.. not highly restrictive manifolds like more modern vehicles with emission concerns. I believe the exhaust is 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 true dual, stock without any cats or anything restrictive. The mufflers from the 69's are those funny looking non-chamber sticks/tubes which are packed with fiberglass (which quickly blows out to be just a perferated tube).
So combine the facts that the engine moves quite a bit more air (and fuel, thus creating more exhaust) through the engine and a larger volume 'air' out the stock non-restrictive exhaust, that gives you the louder and deeper sound.
I've done quite a bit of mods to my car and the exhaust sounds pretty decent now.. not quite a '69 SS Camaro sound, but definatly nice; http://video.google.ca/videoplay?doc...99349&hl=en-CA

Re: Big QUESTION for everyone???
Brisk pretty much got it. The '69 engine specs for an SS are for a much higher compression (10:1) bigger cam, higher flow engine, rated at 300 HP and pushing a LOT more air out the exhaust. This results in a lot more "bass" for lack of a better term, in the exhaust note.
You can try all the mufflers in the world, and if the engine doesn't move a lot of air (which is the sign of horsepower) they start to sound like the fart-cans on the imports, all raspy noise and no "growl". The cats cut out some of it on wimpier motors, but cat or not, there is no faking the sound of an engine that's moving a lot of air. A 69 SS moves a lot of air.
