the best header gaskets?

I have a 91 t/a 5.0 tpi w/ elderbrock headers flowing into one 3" y, no cat, straight pipe 3" to a flowmaster with 3" inlet and two 2 1/2" tail pipes.

The car also has an accel ignition system, 8 mm wires. Don't think that would madder but?

Anyway I keep blowing the gaskets out, its not just one cylinder so I don't think the headers are warped, I've replace the gaskets 3 time last year. I'm currently using the single port thin metal gaskets.

I've heard talk of a aluminum gasket that is the cats meow?

Thanks,
Rich

Re: the best header gaskets?

I have a similar setup, 91 TPI 5.0 5 speed, Hooker 2055's Jet Hot coated, Magnaflow 3" cat Flowmaster 3" 1 in 1 out...

I used Percy's soft aluminum gaskets... there are other's, but they crush when tightened... But I also have a set of Breslin Locking bolts to keep tight.. a little less hectic than the Stage 8 or wire tie... No problems...

Breslin Bolts...
http://search.ebay.com/search/search...der&category0=

be sure and get the correct ones for you motor (right length) or you can damage your heads, pierce water passage ways, etc...

I bought the gaskets on Ebay too...

Looks like summit probably sells them too.. I think local auto parts stores may have them too & other brands... just remember, soft aluminum.

Re: the best header gaskets?

Earl's, the best ones I've used yet. I had the bolts fall out and the gasket didn't blow. They also have replacement inserts so you don't have to buy the whole thing everytime you take things apart.
Here's the # I use from Summit.....EAR-29DD3BERL (D-port) 1.55x1.63

Re: the best header gaskets?

Thanks for the info, It sounds like aluminum is the way to go. I am interseted in the rimflex gaskets.

I like that there are no special bolts and they will seal up to an 1/16".

But, I'll problem go with the alum. its a tried and true fix

Re: the best header gaskets?

I used copper gaskets on hooker 2055's with stage 8 locking header bolts and never had a problem. I think one of the biggest problems with gasket leaks is botls backing out and people over torquing them. Also make sure mounting surface is clean on your headers and heads. I used one of those green scotch bright pads you can get for a die grinder...takes all the crap off but does not take the metal off.

Re: the best header gaskets?

I also have had good luck with Earls header gaskets. Like Don siad you can lose a bolt and they still seal. I also like the Breslin style header bolt. Between the two no header leaks.

Re: the best header gaskets?

This is an easy question. Alum or copper header gaskets, and locking header bolts, i have not had a header leak in 4 years.
