3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

i have a 1991 camaro z28 convertible and just (re)built the motor (heads, cam, intake, headers, etc) and i have the hooker 2055's and was wondering how to hook up the 3" y-pipe to a "stock" exhuast ..

i dont know if from the cat back is "stock" .. but its not rusted, isnt mandrel bent, and sounds like a flowmaster ..

but i am going to take out the cat, then tear it to pieces for the flange and weld the flange to a 3"pipe (with some adapters)

now theres this old guy at orielly's that i HATE b/c he always has something negative to say .. and im pretty sure he drives a BONE stock car and doesnt know what "modified cars" are even .. lol ..

neways .. when i was buying the pipe from another guy i know at orielly's (i practically live there and know them all) .. the old guy had to come up and say "what do you need that for, thats way to big for the camaro you got" .. i go "umm .. no its not i got a 3" y pipe and im gonna take out the cat" .. he goes " but you need it for emmissions" .. "no i dont ive allready taken emmissions two weeks ago" .. then he goes again " well you car wont run right" ..

from there on he was just tryin to **** me off like he does every damn time i go there ..

if im not mistaking on a v8 .. having no exhuast at all (just headers) will yield more hp / tq than with an exhaust system .. now on a 4 cyl you need some back pressure ..

is this correct or am i missing something out and is the old pos right?

thanx ..

ps. advanced auto parts is a million times better than orielly's (but orielly's is closer .. lol)

Re: 3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

Those negative people **** me off, but anyways going to a smaller exhaust, especially not mandrel bent will lose horsepower and torque. But you already knew that.

I say if you spent all that money on those headers and ypipe y not just get he catback also, hookers catback costs 250 bucks. and sounds/flows awesome.

tell the old man to "{BLANK} up a crooked rope" sorry to say that but that makes me SO MAD, i cant stand people like that, our auto zone has a guy like that, id love to drag him out back one day LOL......i got NO EMMISSIONS on mine and it runs great and yes i still have the TBI and computer, my chip has been modified, but car ran great before the mod of the chip and no emissions. but i agree, you need to back that nice Y pipe up with a good, atleast 3in high flow system.

yea .. i would love to rough up that bastard a little or atleast show him what a real car can do .. lol .. neways .. yea when i get the money im gonna back it up with a good 3" high flow cat and 3" mandrel bent exhuast system .. ive just spent $3000 on this motor and gotta pay that off to my parents first (im 17 years old) .. but i only paid $1500 for the car which is a friggen steal for a 1991 camaro z28 convertible w/ the 305 and 5 speed manual ..

yea good luck with it, you may be able to get 3 1/2 going out to the back with whatever muffler set up you want, i know my 3" is a tight fit

Re: 3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

do i need a 3 1/2 for a 305 tpi (mildly built) .. would it put out more power than a 3" ? .. or would a 3" system be sufficient ..

the guy at orielly's was convinced that a 3" pipe was WAY to big for a camaro .. but then again he used to work at a dealership, not a muffler shop .. hahah ..

Re: 3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

Any 3" catback will be more than sufficient for your car. No need to waste on 3.5" pipe, or a 4" mufflex unless you are driving some drag car in the 10s' or some crazy blower app.

And BTW i think hooker's 3" catback is a little over 300. Flowmaster is $350.

And dont get too mad at the old man. He probably used to work at the dealership or something. Technicians usually know what they learn about fixing or repairing facotry parts. Not aftermarket stuff. 3" is fine.

Re: 3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

lol .. i dont get "mad" .. i just want to beat the livin crap out of him .. hahaha

nah .. every time i go in there he has to say something to me, he's an absolute jerk ..

like he will even make some stupid remark about what color i paint my motor .. i buy red paint .. "whats that for" .. "paiting my motor" .. "why would you ever paint a motor that color, your supposed to paint it black, they came factory black" ..

it was chevy red .. wtf is wrong with that

another time i went in there and bought some fog lights to put on the back of my brothers truck for reversing at night ..

he goes "if you need those to see then you dont need a liscense" ..

if he pisses me off one more time im gonna tell the manager of orielly's to fire the bastard b/c everything i buy, he tries to convince me i DONT need it .. if you ask me than he is losing business for them ..

but thats my oppinion ..

neways .. yes i might go with the hooker cat back or a flowmaster .. i like the way both systems sound but im leaning torwards the hooker .. has more of a throaty raspy sound ..

thanx ..

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but the hooker is not raspy at all, zero rasp. Throaty yes indeed.

The flowmaster is raspy up top and it seems that everyone that gets the flowmaster catback ends up regretting it. Why not learn from their mistake?

Re: 3" y-pipe to stock exhaust

oh .. saw a couple videos on youtube .. guess the camara made it a little raspy

but yea i like how flowmasters sound but when you pull up to a stoplight, chances are the person next to you has one ..

i think ill go for a hooker cat back b/c they do sound really good and are different from the flowmaster ...

it seems to me like flowmasters are getting like hondas .. everyone has one (except me .. haha) ..

oh.. nice website by the way .. hahaha .. ricehatersclub .. me and my friend were laughing our a$$'s of earlier reading some stuff on there ..
