Is this possible if i add a Y-pipe?
Is this possible if i add a Y-pipe?
ok so i have a stock 86 z28 . Ive taken a look under the car as far as i can see, theres just one straight pipe coming out of where the engine is, then goes down the car until it hits the muffler which has one input and two outputs. So the question is, can i cut the one straight pipe in the middle then add a Y pipe so i can add two mufflers? for example have two SLP loudmouths. Another question is could i cut the straight pipe then add a single input/single output muffler, and after the muffler add a y pipe so i can have two ehaust tips??

Split from single pipe to two mufflers = '82-'83 factory system. They used more of a "T" pipe, so it didn't work all that well.
Single in/single out split to two tailpipes - maybe, but why?
What engine/induction do you have? If stock LG4, not much of this makes sense with the restrictive 2-1/4" I-pipe. A '86-'90 TPI single cat aftermarket 3" system with a 3" single in/single out muffler will flow better than any of those options.

The 8th character of your VIN will tell what it had from the factory. "H" = base V8, LG4, with carburetor - terrible exhaust from the factory. "F" = LB9, tuned port injection - pretty good exhaust from the factory.

Thats a sick motor! I would rather have a factory L69 car than any TPI car.
It means you have the 305, carburated, but its the "high output" motor. I also believe that it had a special L69 exhaust and y-pipe that is supposed to be good from the factory.

Also extremely rare in '86.
I'd want a check on the model year.
But, yes, L69 had the "good" exhaust, like the LB9. In fact, I wouldn't bastardize it.
FWIW, the pictured system is crimp-bent, small I-pipe. A simple mandrel-bent 3" aftermarket system would easily out-perform it.

'86 was last year for that engine FYI. Think they stopped putting them in very early during that year too
