what is A I R and how does it work. Do I have it on my 85 z28 LG4?

 

A.I.R. is the emissions equipment supplied with all GM cars though I can't recall what the acronym actually stands for. More than likely, if you bought your car stock, you'll have it because I am almost positive that it was required by the manufacturer by Federal law.

1. Look at your cat. does it have a small tube coming off of it and going up behind the engine?
2. Look at your engine, specifically your exhaust manifolds, do you have little tubes coming up off them that eventually combine into a large piece iwth a hose connected to it?
3. Look at the passenger side front of your engine bay, as you look at it, to your left, down to the left of the cank, is there another accessory? (this is the smog pump).
4. Just behind your alternator, is there a bunch of black tubing that runs everytwhich way? Two tubes (one each) goes to your exhaust manifold, another goes to your "A.I.R. tube" that comes up from the cat.

If youv'e got these things, then yes, your car has A.I.R. hooked up. If it doesn't, or any of these lines is cut/blocked off, then someone took them out before you bought it.

Air Inject Reaction

The system provides additional oxygen in the exhaust gases to continue the combustion process. The system also provides additional air to the catalytic converter under certain conditions.
