Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

Im looking to buy a 3 inch cat-back for my 92 camaro with a 305 TBI, i got under the car yesterday and noticed a foot long gash in the intermediate pipe, i guess it just cracked in half. Now i need a new one. I want something that is going to sound good at idle and at cruising speeds, and my price range is from $350 to $400. Any advice on which system to go with?

Find a used Borla system!!! I bought mine on ebay for $275. It's stainless steel, so it'll last a looong time.

Check out Magnaflows website, they have video of a third -gen.
http://magnaflow.com/

I bought one of their catbacks from this company:
http://www.hottexhaust.com/index.htm

Do a google search for them and look for discount codes.

I used "veedub" and paid $360.00

I also got a cat from here: http://www.discountperformanceautoparts.com/

Re: Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

I'd probably try to avoid 3" exhaust on a TBI 305. When I had my TBI 89 Formula, I put a 3" dynomax CVX kit on it and pulled the cat. It sounded really good, but my fuel economy suffered and I really think the car made slightly less power with the larger exhaust (this was years ago, in the time before dynojets began to roam the land). If I personally did another TBI car, I'd probably stick with a 2.5 or 2.75" exhaust.

Your results may vary.

Do you know of a smaller system that i could go with that is stainless steel? or do you know of another system that works good with TBI?

Re: Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

I put the magnaflow 16829 as well as a magnaflow hi flow bullet cat on my 92 rs that has 305 tbi, i love it. before i put it on there was NO muffler due to "rustation", if thats a word but anyway after install, i noticed that it wasnt any quieter. reccomend this!

here is video clip of magnaflow, keep in mind everything is stock 'cept for cat and cat back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjrgbadwhfA

i purchased this from hottexhaust for 426 shipped including the retail $ 90 cat.

Re: Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

ok, i talked to a local exhaust shop today, and they said that if i get a 3 inch system it should not affect back pressure or my fuel economy, they said if i mess with the cat it would affect that because the back pressure is built up at the cat, now is this true or not?

Re: Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

Im probably going to be ording the magnaflow system within a couple days, but before i order it i have a question. All of my dads friends build hot rods for a living, and they all said that since my motor is not making a lot of horsepower i dont need a 3 inch system and that it will not create enought back pressure and will hurt my fuel economy. I called a local muffler shop and they said the back pressure is created at the cat. I dont know what to believe, which is true. Any and all help would be appriciated.

I believe that the bigger exhaust will hurt backpressure, i never heard of the cat creating the backpressure for the whole exhaust. i orderd a dynomax cat back system from summit for $184 2.5'' and stainless steel. it sounds great at idle and there is still a good rumble at cruising. at lower RPM's it sounds alot meaner then at 2500 and up

Magnaflow just installed!!! Incredible sound. Can't believe the richness of the sound. A nice deep rumble at idle that is "soft" sounding. WOT it really sounds mean in a good way, lol. I got mine for $350. Shop around you'll find a good deal.

Re: Need a cat-back for a 305 TBI

yeah at summit it WLK-17495 for a H.O. from 82-92 5.0/5.7 dual tailpipes and the one i orderd for $184 is # WLK-17493 for 83-92 2.8/3.1/5.0 dual tailpipes. installation is fairly easy, you need to get all 4 wheels of the groung and then just drop two crossmember supports with a couple bolts and then you have the room to get the exhaust over the rear end. Be careful for the brakline because i busted my right rear brake in the process but it was alredy decrepit and should have been replaced for saftey.
