hooker or magnaflow longtubes

i have a 91 rs, 5 spd, 305 tbi motor with 75000miles on it. it is stock. im plannin to put new rotor cap and some accel sparkplug wires. yesterday i found some 3 inche long tube headers may be hooker or magnaflow at a shop.
my question if i put these headers and connect it to a flowmaster 80 series via Y pipe is it advisable, considering my motor is only 305 and it is 1991 model. will installing hearders effect my engine in a good way or bad way. and how much hp can i expect from this.

Anytime you can free up some airflow it will make a HP difference. Make sure you add enough fuel to compensate.

Shouldn't make a difference at this point. Retuning would be nice, but for just headers its not worth the price of buying all the nessesary equipment. He should get a nice seat of the pants gain.

You lose some low-end grunt, but it should pull harder up top.

shorties will generally be easier to install, and from what i've read offer better ground clearance. I ran shorty headers on my dd for almost a year before i sold it, with no problems at all. And depending on where you live, shorty headers may be the only legal option because of smog testing. The two posts above are mostly in regards to tuning.

Re: hooker or magnaflow longtubes

Shorties are not a replacement for a full length header, what shorties offer is better flow than a manifold, and the same ground clearance as a manifold.

Since our cars weren't designed with longtubes in mind we don't get much ground clearance with them installed.

Longtubes can offer a significant gain on the top end over shorties.

Thats not to say that shorties are a waste of money, plenty of people have gone fast with them. However, the y-pipe design is extremely important.

Cheap shorties aren't really worth it. Either spend money on a good set of shorties, or spend money on a good set of LT headers.

I never said shorties were a replacement for longtubes. In fact the only reason i got shorties on my camaro was because the speed shop i ordered them through got me the wrong parts and wouldnt take them back and reorder because they were a "special order" part. It seems like the OP wants to daily drive his car and in that light he should order a good shorty header. I like hedmans, but have heard many good things about hookers.
