Calling all 3rd gens with headers
Hey guys,
about a month ago i installed a set of 2460 ceramic coated Hooker headers. I noticed the driver side is about .8 mm from hitting the frame rail. I spoke with hooker and summit and they sent out another to make sure that it wasnt a manufacturing error. It was identical. Ive been looking at some pics of headers here and it looks like i may not be the only one. Has anyone else seen this with hookers slps edelbrocks? Id like to find out how big a deal this is. I would think that with the motor torqueing that i may have problems with the header hitting the frame. Let me know no matter which brand yall have. and do post some pretty pics if you get em.

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
mine are the same way, really close but not 8mm like a good solid 1/2" i dont have too much movement on my motor when i really get on it, but i got brand new engine mounts so that could be why. If you are really concerned, check to make sure your engine is centered, i had to move a set of mounts before becuse it was ridiculously crooked. Sh*te happens at the factory. If you are good and centered , notch out the close area, just make sure you make it good and tight again with fill panels.

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
I would be okay with 1/4 inch really. the clearance now is .8mm (feeler gauge) i run poly mounts so movement should be minimal. I could drill out the MM holes and scoot the motor a bit. I havent tried to see if it is centered. Hooker said to install the header and bend it using a pry bar and a ratchet strap. As much as i dont want to do that for obvious reasons, id rather than cut holes in the frame. However, nice work fueled soul, that is always an option. I think only one hole would need to be cut with maybe a good 1/2 recess peice welded in. It is only one spot.
I would still like to see how common this problem is. I had a set of edelbrocks without issue but they were smaller than the hookers.

its strange my 2460s fit just fine, though it was a hassle jacking the engine up to get the pass. side in.

Just curious, those with the 2460s, if you also have the y-pipe made for the 2460s, does it sit unusually low? I can see mine from the side of the car, its currently the lowest part on my car.

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
84z - do you have a rattle from there or hear banging on hard accel or decel when the motor moves?? or does it just rub without symptom?
camaro- i do have the y pipe but i have only mocked it up. it didnt fit well i suspect b/c the driver side header. Im not sure really. But to answer your question, it does hang a bit lower than the oil pan, maybe less than an inch? Mine rubbed on the pan when i mocked it up which is a big no no so im not sure how much help i am but, it should fit between the member and the pan. and shouldnt contact the pan but not be so far away from it that it rubs pavement on bumps. unfortunately the exhuast on 3rd gens has generally been the lowest point of the car. just not a whole lot of room down there, otherwise wed all be running duals
.
An Update - I got another set of headers sent to me by summit and they are identical so it is not a manufacturing error. I spoke with hooker again and their advice was to bend the header while bolted up by prying on the collector and using a ratchet strap.
Not exactly what i wanted to do, doesnt seem like a proper way out of the situation, but it may correct the problem and im not exactly working on a koenigsegg. so i will let yall know how that goes. also, I was pretty impressed with customer service from both hooker and summit. good stuff

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
one problem i had with hedders were dynomax ones, because they came off of a fuel injected car and my car came with a carb. fi cars have fuel lines on the left and carbs on the right that could be a problem you can look into just my two cents

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
Problem is, with the Hooker Y-pipe its a good 1.5-2 inches lower than the stock y pipe was, so its really low, I dont like my exhaust being seen from the side of the car just 5 feet away.

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
its a 92 so no carb
hmmm. i looked at an old picture of my edelbrock y pipe setup and it wasnt THAT low. makes me wonder if part of the prob isnt that the y pipe was welded inacurately. how far from the pan is it?

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
try using different clam shells or putting washers in between the motor and mounts

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
Try using energy suspension poly urethane motor mounts. They will raise the motor at least 1/2 inch compared to worn out factory or rubber mounts.

Re: Calling all 3rd gens with headers
As mentioned above, you can swap motor mounts to see if any clearance is gained. However, after installing numerous sets of headers on these cars, I am happy so long as the headers seals, despite what contact might exist. Any gap, no matter how dimensionally small, can be a blessing at times. Just keep an eye on it. It shouldn't be a problem long term.
