HEADER QUESTION

Hello....
I have a 1986 T/A with a L-98 engine and a N-10 dual cats. I want to install a header but I do not want to cut up the dual cat system. Does anyone offer a stainless steel header that has a direct fit??? Maybe SLP???

Thanks
Bill

Something doesn't sound right here. Neither L98 nor dual cats were offered in 1986. Might have been swapped in, though.

I don't know of stainless. SLP no longer supports 3rd gens. Hedman makes a good dual cat version, but mild steel coated is the best you can do. TGO member Dyno Don makes a great set of 3rd gen headers as well.

Re: HEADER QUESTION

HELLO......
Your right about the swap. I bought my 1986 T/A in 1987. After a lot of good use of my 305, I got a killer deal on a L-98 with a 700r4 transmission.
After having the trans built into my original case and useing the original output shaft, I installed it into my T/A. In 2001, I first learned about 1LE parts. I also found that at that time, everything was still available from G.M.
I bought all of the brake parts, spindles, springs, e brake handle assembly & cables and the N-10 dual cat assembly. Later upon installing the exhaust, I found out the I also needed the exhaust manifolds. My goal at this point is to copy the G.M. performance package that was offered for awhile. Nothing radical, just good reliable performance that doesn't have to be worked on all the time. At age 61, i'm slowing down just a bit.
Thanks for the recommedation on the headers, i'll check it out.

Bill

I bought a set of the 1-3/4" SLP headers hoping that they would bolt right up to the front of the factory exhaust. No such luck and I wasn't willing to hack up my clean factory dual cat exhaust either so I sold them.

SLP used to sell a complete kit for dual cat cars but I rarely see them for sale (saw one set on EBAY and it sold at a high price).

Re: HEADER QUESTION

Nobody's headers will bolt up to any other y-pipe, and no y-pipe will bolt up to any other headers (or exhaust manifolds). They are complete units and must be installed together.

Re: HEADER QUESTION

Do you know of any headers with pipes that will bolt right up to the front of a dual-cat factory exhaust?

Seems like a vendor could make some money meeting the demand (but I guess SLP could not).

Re: HEADER QUESTION

I had a set of the TES headers....I don't think I will buy another Edelbrock product again! Going from the TES's to a set of the Hedman shorts w/ Y-pipe and picked up a ton of power (around 70 HP acording to the dyno). Mind you a stock motor might be fine with them, but anything more than a very mild 350 should have something better.

As for the dual cat system, I would recommend going to a good single high flow cat. Performance will be better, and current converters are much more efficient than what came on our cars!

Re: HEADER QUESTION

I dont know of any headers that are a complete bolt-on in your driveway. They all require some kind of modification.

And no, a single cat setup is NOT better performing than a dual-cat setup in any way, shape or form. 8 cylinders flowing thru 2 cats is better than 8 cylinders flowing thru 1 cat. You're right on the Edelbrock headers though, they're at the bottom of the list.

my hedman short and matching y-pipe bolted right in using simple hand tool and no mods at ALL!

so yah...theres one setup. It the guys who have to run the uber badazz longtubes scraping the speed bumps and such that have so many issues with fitment and mod'ing the exhuast.

but yah like i said the setup i put on my 85 trans am and now going on teh 92 is the hedman shortie header. Works excellant

i had the impression the SLP header kits (with pipes) were also simple bolt ons but don't know that for a fact. i only saw one or two complete SLP kits on eBay a couple of years ago and they were > $700.
