Currently Flowmaster but ineed louder and more performance

I love my flowmaster dual exhaust but it does not have that muscle car sound to me. I want to know what would be the best to get on mine? The old ladies dad has a custom borla that he made when he worked for them and i may try that on. But i need something that will ****in turn heads and be ca legal.

Re: Currently Flowmaster but ineed louder and more performance

Well based on what you said your car needs to be Ca state legal...

i am not sure on the laws in ca, but here in colorado your exhaust has to be stock/stock replacement (i.e. muffler shop replaced your old worn out exhaust leaking pipes with factory replacements.) or its illegal

so if its the same in cali, i'd assume your borla would be illegal.

but noise violation as long as its not terribly loud you could probably get away with it, I cut the bottom of my muffler out and drove it like that for two years (the muffler bearings went south is what i told the cops )

Then i cut my cat out... that really got the cops attention.

So just be careful on how loud you go..

They may frown on the true duals, as third-gen cars never had those stock.

I run a single Flowmaster and I just passed CA smog, so I don't think it matters what muffler(s) are used, as long as you have them.

To be CA legal it needs to have an air-tubed cat (or cats, mine has two of them stock).

Re: Currently Flowmaster but ineed louder and more performance

you are going to hate this but as of 1/1/09 you cant move the original flow of the exhaust system. if it was dual into dual cats that went under the passenger seats, that is the way it has to flow. it was a nutty system that had dual exhaust, dual cats then went into a ypipe.
once you get to the out side of the cat, you can do anything you want, provided it does not adversely effect the cat performance.
there are even rules making it harder to get an aftermarket cat - only a few are available and most require stock ones.
befoer 010109 the dmv would say dont move the exhaust but there was not really a law against it, but now there is.
you can change the cat back but that is it.

Is CA really that strict?!?! 75% of the cars and trucks here in MN have different exhausts, straight pipes, you name it we got it! My cousin has a lifted Dodge with the cummins (oh god) and that thing is straight piped. Does Al "global warming dumb**" Gore live in California? I'll NEVER IN MY LIFE live in such a freedom sucking state. End rant.

My car has the N10 dual cats stock. I replaced them with the Magnaflow system with larger mandrel-bent pipes. Although this setup is not CARB approved, they are similar enough to stock (pipes run in the stock locations etc.), that they didn't raise any suspicion. The car passed the visual, but a different station may have failed me if they'd asked me if the pipes had a CARB number. This was at a Smog-Only station, and my car was run on a dyno.

Re: Currently Flowmaster but ineed louder and more performance

I have heard borla before on an 86 z28 and it was music to my ears. From that day on I was hooked to borla. I need to step up and get a larger motor first before I drop a grand on my exhaust.

Re: Currently Flowmaster but ineed louder and more performance

the pipes dont need a carb number - the headers and the cats do. hooker 2055 have a carb number right on them and as of 1/1/09 you have to be able to read the numbers on the new approved cats a 5 feet, so the chp can read them without having to look to hard.
my setup is 2055 into a 3 inch y pipe then into a carb approved 3 inch single cat. from there i am still open because i dont know what im going to do.
i dont have to pass until next year so i have some time.
im looking into a single muffler by the drive shaft with one pipe over and out.
but i have carb numbers on the two things that count - the headers and the cat.
