Hey Everyone,

Has anyone ever before tried installing Edelbrock headers? If so would you have any pics or tips on what to look for?

Tried searching for it but i come up with the headmen longtube edition.

I installed Edelbrock headers on my 84 Z28 a few years ago. I have the L69 engine not the TPI so your install might be a little different than mine. My advice would be to get as much stuff out of the way as possible. On my car the drivers side header is easily accessible, however the passenger side header is blocked by smog equipment, heater hoses, etc. I removed all of these plus some sensors to get wires out of the way. I removed all of my accessories too because I was replacing a few other things at the same time; water pump, timing chain, etc. Having all of this stuff out of the way definitely made the header install easier. If your removing all this stuff chances are your not going to remember where it all goes when you want to put it back together so put bolts and stuff in labeled bags. Take a bunch of pictures as you remove the stuff too so you can see where it was.

Also I would recommend switching to a heated oxygen sensor if you don't have one already, either a 3 wire or a 4 wire. I used a 3 wire and haven't had any problems. The reason for this is the single wire oxygen sensor may not receive sufficient heat due to the differences between the stock exhaust manifold and the header. This can cause incorrect readings leading to a lean mixture at idle and other computer problems. You should be able to find more information on this by doing a search. That's where I found it when I did the install. Good luck.

Dude thanks very much for the info I really appreciate it. I have done searche's like How To Install Headers but nothing that I could use. Once im in the are i'm going to remove all th AC stuff since I dont have AC in my car so i'll be glad cause of that. But i'll make sure to take a lot of pics for the reason of what you said and the purpose of helping someone else like your helping me. The headers wont bold right on too the stock exhaust right?

The edelbrock headers I have come with a y pipe too, so i didn't have to weld anything. The y pipe goes back to the catalytic converter and bolts to it. I have a four bolt flange on my catalytic converter, I think it switched to a two bolt flange later on but the whole system should bolt and clamp together. If you plan on eliminating your catalytic converter then you would have to weld in a section of pipe or something, but if you are keeping the stock converter you should be able to bolt and clamp it together.

 

Cause I bought these headers of a user here on the board's but the Y pipe or so was cut in a way to have 2 cats. Which i'm planning on converting mine to 2 cats. Ok my next question on the flanges or so on the headers is a 2 bold and the " Y " pipe is 2 bolts is there like a gasket that goes between them or so? Casue I dont see how they would go togethere since they both identical ends where you hook it up to one another.

I'm not familiar with the two bolt flange, I have a four bolt flange on mine. I do have a thin metal gasket that goes between the y pipe and catalytic converter. I would try asking someone with the two bolt flange or dual converters about it.

 

Before you get your headers bolted in place........ Be sure to run the dipstick tube into the block before tighneing the headers down. There is a tricky angle that the dipstick needs to be installed at and it's a LOT easier to install the dip stick before the headers is in place !

I installed a set of 350 TPI headers on my 86 IROC last spring. The Original connections from the headers to the Y-pipe ( on both sides ) required a donut gasket around each of the Y-Pipe ports. If the headers are new they will be included - if they are used than be sure that these gaskets are in good condition ! ( they can be bought thru Summit racing if needed ! )

Change your spark plugs and wires now. With the headers it is basically impossible to get to the spark plug against the firewall on the passenger side. Also if they are bare metal then make sure to get all wires as far away from them as possible.
