Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
I had a 90 rs with the 305. I had the flowmaster 80 series with no cats and sounded really good. Everyone looked when gave it some gas. But i live in ohio and i dont have any smog stuff.
Then with your 305 you are no where near 250hp. You might be around 160-180 at the crank. They said they were rated at 170. But most will have around 130-140hp at the wheels. Thats for the 305 tb not the 305tpi. But no stock rs has the tpi.
Its fine to do an exshaust and stuff but you are honestly wasting your money. I sold mine about 5 months ago and i went to a 86 corvette. With the Z51 handling and the L98 with alluminum heads. What a HUGE difference! Long story short this guy really need money bad so instead of his asking price 5500! i gave him 3,800!!!!
So you might want to think about how much work you really wanna do bc that 305 isnt really going to get you anywhere performance wise. Their are a few guys that build them but like me in high school that dosent have alot of money just get a diffent car.
thats what i think. Good luck

To the wheels you might get 5-10. Iv heard you can get up to 20-25hp. It will sound really good and its cheap! But you wont really feel a difference.

I have an 89 RS, I am running a 3" Hooker cat back w 3" hi flow cat. Sounds really nice. You should also put new headers and y pipe in, to optimize flow, sound and power. I have yet to install a set of heddman shorties and a new y pipe. With better flow out, you should think about better air flow in....I use a 4" open element. For the sound of an exhaust, it is personal preferance.

Flowmasters suck in my opinion. Grab a set of GMMG Chambered exhaust. Built for strictly Camaros only between the years 1982-2002. No other type of car. Based off of the legendary 1969 chambered systems. and they're built in california and they pass the california emissions/smog.

set is 750$ and if u want the oval tips thats another 150$. Better than Borla in my opinion. when i get some extra cash imma get a set aswell.

Not really sure about that one.You would most likely be better off finding a L98 or Lt1 for a couple hundred bucks and swap it in.

My Trans Am has the factory exhaust but without the cat. 305 and the dual resonators at the back.
Here's a video I put on myspace of how it sounds:

I had a Flowmaster on mine for about 1 year. I heard the Borla system and then replaced the Flowmaster with this system. http://www.borla.com/products/produc...=14888&ref=cat
You can adjust the sound to the level you prefer. Even with the open setup like mine it's easy on the ears when you are just driving around. You can talk to people in the car without yelling at them. I've had cars that have had glass packs on them and it is OK for about 3 days. After that you begin to wish it wasn't so load. Also with this setup it's high quality stainless steel. Not all stainless steel is the same. If a magnet will stick to it it will rust. You get what you pay for and it will last for a long time. If you look around you can get it for a lot less than the MSRP.

Stock exhaust with a gutted cat and a flowmaster 80 welded onto the back of it. Probably no performance gain at all, but it sounded nice for a stock motor.
As the other guys said, making a 305 TBI car fast is a bit of a waste of time. Just make it sound good and call it a day til you can get a hotted up 383/LS1 in there.

Magnaflow is very nice especially for a single in dual out
The comments about flowmaster is absolutely FALSE, there is ONLY 1 flowmaster that restricts flow and thats the crossflow design. The rest were designed for performance so 1 of 20 designs are bad, not a bad ratio in my book....I have the 10 series race mufflers on my car,X pipe 2.5 under axle to 1 chambers and 3" tails

Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
Exhaust is going to gain you very very little HP wise - so don't spend alot. To get a 305 to perform very well at all (hp wise), you'll need to spend more in upgrades than it would cost to drop in a new bigger motor. Heads suck, exhaust manifolds suck, intake sucks - the entire TBI stock system is just plain restrictive - So no need to spend much on a full exhaust system. Enjoy the fuel economy of it, and If you need new muffler anyway, look at Hooker Aerochamber - flows better than the others, and muffler itself is under $125. Any new cat will flow better than stock - all aftermarket cats are less restrictive.

Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
since your in california, your definatly gunna need a cat on there, personally id go with and have in the past the flowmaster american thunder 3" catback, get some headers and a y-pipe and it'll soundd real nice. As far as your figuring out the park and reverse, check your linkage, might have come loose, my 83 t/a did that same thing, couldnt get it all the way into park, but also kinda a blind spot from the nuetral into reverse (just enough play to bypass it) it wanted to skip reverse and go into nuetral or drive, cant remeber it was a long time ago, but check there first, I could be wrong and it could be more serious though, but thats a good starting point.
Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
Hey guys,
I just purchased a 92 camaro rs 305. I am new to camaro's since I have always owned 5.0 mustangs in the past. This camaro had a single cat and duel exhaust with no mufflers. I thought it actually sounded great but wanted a little more sound so I took it in and had the cat removed. Now it sounds too loud imo and am not satisfied with the sound. What can I do to have a nice deep throaty sound and be loud enough to satisfy without being to annoying. I was thinking about throwing the cat back on for now, but I dont know what my results will be, being new to the camaro.
Thanks for any imput

Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
I honestly think the best bang for your buck system and just one of the best overall is the magnaflow system. from what iv heard and from owners it sounds AMAZING! it has a deep 60's muscle car rumble to it and isnt very loud untill you get on it that is! also is stainless steel, the tips look BAD AZZ, gain 18hp/15tq dyno sheet proven on magnaflow website, just flat out amazing. Also it will only cost you $320 bucks from bandit exhaust with free shipping!
for an cat they all are basically the same exept for price and your wanna go with the magaflow cat for $95 bucks at bandit exhuast.
for y-pipe and headers your best bet and in my opinion an super deal is to go with hooker 2055 headers. i dont know a whole lot about these but what i do know is that they are already painted, fairly light weight, very very nice flowing, and probaly the best part - it includes an very nice put together and flowing y-pipe! just the y-pipe alone could cost you an good 200 bucks and while not necessary your defintly gonna want it. Also i belive price is a tad above 400 bucks which pretty dang good.
this is the combo im going for and i defintly think it would net you an pretty good power jump and will make sure people know your there. I honestly do not know how loud this combo would be but it defintly dont belive its would be annoying loud at all. good luck.

I've never owned a hooker aerochamber catback, but I have heard enough of them to where I think they sound really good. Price is decent as well. I think the 80 series crossflow design is weak. I have an american thunder 3" catback, single in single out tucked flush with the body lines. It's nice and quiet at idle, sounds pretty good under acceleration, but doesn't attract unwanted attention, something to consider here in Cal. I do however have a 3" cutout install after the cat before the muffler with an electric plate that I can open from inside the car. Sounds insane when it's open, very deep idle and if I ever feel like I want a little more sound, I open it. Something to consider having the best of both worlds. If I had a grand sitting around I might buy a GMMG setup, but right now I can't afford it

Did prices really go up that much in 3 years? I don't think these cars have been getting more popular in the past 3 years. I'm looking into exhaust but all the prices seem to have gone up.

You can pick 40hp on your TBI by swapping out your exhaust wih good headers, 3" cat, and a 3" cat back.
I recently put on a Magnaflow cat back and y-pipe (TPI single 3" cat only for the Y) in my 1989 GTA and no only is it fully stainless steel, but sounds really good too.

40hp is a massive increase, like better than 25% over stock, sure seems a person could feel that, and definitely prove it.
I put on 2055s, a 3" Catco, and 3" Hooker cat-back, performed a tune-up, and fixed a miss under cruise, all in one day, car sounds much better though quieter, but certainly doesn't feel any quicker than it was with its manifolds and sorry 2.25/2.5 crush bent exhaust and generic muffler.

I did testing before and after the exhaust and can quantify what happened. Keep in mind I did the Camaro exhaust in 1990, when there was only a fraction of the performance knowledge we have today.
Did you do any testing at the track before and after your install?
Did you do any sort of fuel and timing tuning after the change? More power needs more fuel and can sometimes help with advanced timing. Your fuel pump may be weak and not be able to keep up with the fuel demands, holding back performance...

Re: Best sound and best HP for my 92 camaro rs 305
I did similar exhaust systems to my LG4 Camaro and IROC and ended up picking up about 35hp by using the stock manifolds, 3" y-pipe, 3" cat, and a 3" cat back (no headers). Both cars went from low 17's to mid 15's with just the exhaust changes (I didn't even tune the carb at first). The cars went from smooth and slow to a match for the early, higher powered LB9 cars in a few hours. Not only did it pick up HP and free breathing at high rpm, it also increased TQ and under 3k seat of the pants feel.

I haven't run the car against a clock, just figured since a claimed 20hp was very noticeable in my 6600lb truck, 30-40 would be immediately noticeable in the much lighter car. Timing is slightly advanced, she's TBI, I have yet to mess with programming or adjusting psi, fuel pump could be getting weak, reads good, 13psi at idle, haven't checked it underway, got a brand new pump waiting to go in, just haven't yet.
