Headers

I was thinking about buying a set of headers for my car, but the thing is I plan on getting a new motor for the car. I would need the headers then anyways. So if I buy 305 headers will they fit a 350? I think they should but the key word is think and I dont want to buy them if they wont switch over. And would I need to get a y-pipe? Wouldn't be hard since my buddy has an exhaust shop. Also what is a price for the install on headers?

Re: Headers

The same headers will bolt up to any SBC. Whether or not they're correctly sized depends on more factors.

Yes they should... head on over to summitracing.com
there you will find that most headers if not all of them will say 5.0 and 5.7

Re: Headers

Well thanks very much. Like i said i thought they would but its always better to ask before so I dont buy two sets. So how much will it run for an install? Or would this be something that I could do or it is better I have a pro?

Re: Headers

Basic hand tools to install the headers themselves... the connection to the rest of the exhaust system may require more, depending which headers and Y pipe you choose.

Re: Headers

Would it be better to buy a set with a y-pipe or to have him build it? He would charge for that though. How many hours generally is install for the whole thing?

Re: Headers

the passenger side will be a PITA if you have your AC stuff ... the easiest way is to remove the valve cover.... the drivers side goes on rather easily.... I would probably get the whole setup ....

Re: Headers

Alright thanks for that, so if I have somebody install it so we dont have deal with how much would it run me?
I was thinking about getting Flowtech 11102FLTand the y-pipe that goes with them. I was looking for budget ones off summit racing.

Re: Headers

well depending on whether you need to have your emissions stuff hooked up for the sniffer test, then you will have a limited list of headers that you can install on da' bird... I had to buy the edelbrock TES headers, because of smog regulation here in California... hands are pretty much tied... they ran I think like 350 or so... I only paid 50 dollars to get them installed.. a friend of my dads did it... took him nearly 7 hours... lol.. oh I also threw in a couple of 40s... oh yeah you will also have to remove I believe the alternator and A/C compressor brackets in order to install the hardware supplied with the headers...

Re: Headers

Well I live in a clean air county so no emissions for that and anyways for my area no emissions for I think 96 and lower years. It changed to 94 and then recently I am not sure exactly so thats not an issue.

Re: Headers

I'd spend more money and get something better than the Flowtechs, especially if you want a 350 later.

Re: Headers

2055s are fine, and come with a decent Y pipe. Check to make sure it fits the inlet on your cat though.

Re: Headers

Well i dont have a cat on my car right now. It doesnt take emissions anyways. But I would have to get new pipes and muffler since they are 2.5 pipes any the out of the headers. Which kinda stinks for me since I just had a new muffler and replaced some of the piping since it was in bad shape.

if you have the engine already out is it possible to put the headers on the engine before you install it in the car or is this not possible? I know some cars you can have them attached and some have to go around all sorts of things to install and it just isn't possible until the engine is sat in to install the headers. I know I will have to modify the AC bracket as per the instructions so i will probably at least mach everything up and if I have to uninstall the headers to install the engine so be it but thought I would ask

well the Edelbrock TES headers that I got, came with hardware that allowed all existing brackets to be used with no modification... on the installing the headers out of the car, I think would depend on what type of headers and brand you get... my mechanic that did the engine rebuild told me that he installed the engine with cylinder heads attached, then mounted the headers and finally he finished the rest of it.. .valve covers, intake, and all that other good stuff...

initial install of headers and engine rebuild were different times...

Re: Headers

the headers I have is Dynomax 87733 and I definitely plan on having the heads on the engine when installing . I was just wondering if the headers have to be maneuvered around certain things to install them where they can not be attached before installing the engine or maybe if I could install one side but not the other and install the engine. I know its tight in there and was just trying to get out of all that close work if possible, if not possible thats fine was just wondering. I know on my 69 Super Bee they had to go up from underneath to install them but the 383 in it had allot of room to work with where this camaro doesn't seem to be as roomy as the engine compartment was in the Super Bee
