Cat' verter help milage?

Ok, here's an exhaust 101 Q--

Other than emissions, what purpose does the cat serve? Do cats affect gas milage?

All I know is they " convert " CO2 to less harmful amounts, & get hot.

We have no ECM, so there's no O2 sensor. Til I can afford a good cat, we have a " temporary " pipe in it's place.

Thanks for any education!!

Re: Cat' verter help milage?

With an ECM, adjustments can be made from moment to moment which MIGHT help with mpg.

Without that ECM tuning going on, I don't think it would have much, if any, effect on mpg. Unless it was a clogged up/bad flowing one. Then that would be more of having to depress the gas pedal further to create more power, just to get a car to move. But that would be the case even with ECM tuning going on so.....

Re: Cat' verter help milage?

an engine needs to inhale & exhale just as you & i do . if cat. is old it may well be clogged . try to inhale through your nose & exhale through your mouth covered with a paper towel . you can do it but your not going be doing anything to your full potential . there are many " hi-flow " cats. out there , and many of us ( me ) have eliminated our cats. yes a clogged cat. can affect mileage . whatever you decide , good luck .

Re: Cat' verter help milage?

Actually catalytic converters convert carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (CO2) among other things.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter.htm

Cats tend to get rid of the rattling sound that exhausts have when you rev them up. Also help act as a muffler to a certain extent.

Re: Cat' verter help milage?

It doesn't convert c02, when it reaches 900*F it converts HC's and CO to CO2 and H2O, and reduction converters also convert NOx..

Perform a vacuum test to determine if its plugged.

Thanks for the education!

So since we have no ECM, the temp pipe will have to do for now.
