Question on stock exhaust system

what are those small diameter pipes running back to the CAT Converters? and can i get rid of them? installed subframe connectors, and those small tubes are in my way for a better fit on the exhaust.

Re: Question on stock exhaust system

So, do I really need them? Or I guess I can cut the mounts and try to push them out of the way

Re: Question on stock exhaust system

Doing that will give you a pretty bad exhaust leak. Also, if you have to pass any type of emissions inspection you will fail as soon as they see that. If you don't have emissions testing/visual then go ahead. Just make sure you cap the pipes coming of the cats to keep the exhaust from entering the cabin.

Re: Question on stock exhaust system

your best bet would be to get a set of headers for 100 bucks from jegs unless you can afford another manufacturers. then you can eliminate the "air" pump but like he said unless u have emissions then youll run into issues.

You can get rid of the entire AIR system on the car with little consequence. This has been discussed many times before. Even those in emmisions zones have removed thema nd still passed emmissions. Really depends on where you are.

Re: Question on stock exhaust system

I only have 21000 mi. since new. all stock, except for tower brace and subframes and cold air. there is a small block that those air tubes go through, that is mounted on the outside exhaust pipe, that is giving me trouble reconnecting the exhaust Y pipe up to the passenger side manifold. should i just remove that block with a saw zaw and push them out of way? or remove hole air pump system? My county in NEPA doesnt require emmission testing, but in the near future, i see it coming.

Most auto parts stores carry a retrofit kit which is intended for connecting new catalytic converters to the air system. It is an extremely high temperature silicone hose (Usually blue in color). You could purchase this and then cut and splice it as needed. I had to do this with my IROC to pass emissions.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I had to do the same thing to my Camaro the first year I had it to get it to pass the visual emissions inspection. I live in SW PA. If they are going to be starting emissions inspections in the future, you might as well keep the system intact. You shouldn't need to worry about tailpipe testing though since that is OBDII and up in PA.

I didnt't even notice you were in PA. There is a loophole to the emissions inspections in PA. Any car registered as a classic or antique is exempt from ALL emissions testing. Likewise, any car registered in your name at least 1 year and driven less than 5k miles annually is also exempt from all emissions testing. That loophole is how I have been able to get my 92 Camaro to pass the visual check with a carb and no AIR system on it.

Re: Question on stock exhaust system

No problem! It will seem kind of pricy, (Around 35.00) But after 2 years on my IROC the hoses (I cut mine up into sections and used hose clamps) look like new! They wont melt or discolor.
