In the spirit of being very sneaky. I need my car to be as quiet as possible with out robbing too much power. I am going to be running a pretty large cam in a 350 and I need to draw as little attention as possible. Right now the car has long tubes, no cats, and a flowmaster. I remember reading a long time ago about walker mufflers being quiet and having about the same performance as a flowmaster? Now I know a flowmaster is far from leading the pack with performance gains but I can live with it if it makes about the same power as the flowdaddy. Would I be able to add a glass pack or two in the exhaust system to further quiet it down? Now I know it will never sound completely stock with a big nasty cam in it but I dont want people to stop what they are doing when I roll into a parking lot. I need to fly under the radar as much as possible. What do you guys recommend? Thanks

The borla cat back I have lets you change the tone with restrictor plates. No plate = loud race car sound Full closed plate = stockish sound. electric cut out = total controll

My TSP Rumbler is very quiet under part throttle & cruising. Only gets louder under WOP, but even then, it isn't obnoxious loud.
Here are my videos of it, including one at night with the windows down, cruising down the road showing how it "opens up" at WOT.

At only $240 (base price), it is pretty cheap too, for a nice cat-back.

The alarm that went off was the silver car in the video, right behind my car. And it went off because I was TRYING to set it off. Stupid neighbor had it set WAY too sensitive & I was sick of it going off in the middle of the night.
BTW....That is the ONLY alarm it has ever even made chirp, much less set off complertely.

Good video! I love the headlights popping up and down! Pretty quiet when idling.Originally Posted by Stephen

I wish I could shut my neighbors dog off that easy in the middle of the night.

Your exhaust sounds very healthy, and I think it would scare the pants off any one i will be trying to bait into racing me. Especially with the big solid lift I am putting in it.Originally Posted by Stephen

i would get high flow cats. tbh makes it legal AND will quiet down the exhaust a bit more.Originally Posted by stan36

Off the top of my head you got three choices, magnaflow, tsp rumbler, or dynomax.
the tsp and dynomax are in the simliar price range, the magnaflow wil set you back a bit more, good luck.

And since the Rumbler uses a Magnaflow muffler.....Why pay extra for some brand name, when the final product is just as good as if Magnaflow made it.Originally Posted by iroc stangs

very true, im just throwing out his/her option's
But yah, unless there really is some reason that you think is a good one to get the magnaflow over the tsp rumbler, I really dont see the point in spending the extra $$$ on the magnaflow.

hush power
Mine is pretty much stock quiet with a Magnaflow 3" in dual 2.5" out. Granted I have a single turbo up front, but it doesn't really knock the noise down that much. I'd say less than a cat does. One thing I did find out was that tail pipes make all the difference in the world when it comes to the sound. Summit and others carry pre-formed tail pipes (by Dynomax) that match the factory bends & hangers, but in 2.5". Gives you a nice stock appearance and seems to be designed to get cancel out the last bit of noise!

Dynomax super turbo hemi style mufflers were tested a few years back to be the highest flowing quiet muffler. They have a pretty large case and they wont be the most awesome sounding but they are just slightly louder than stock on my chevelle. Dident have a significant loss of ET at the strip but it did take a bit of fun out of the car.
Strangely enough having a quiet exhaust lets you use more throttle with less drama making the car feel a good bit more powerful and easier to drive.
heres an example

Now please dont get me wrong thes are not the highest flowing or best sounding but they are indeed the best flowing very very quiet muffler

How about a stock muffler/tips from a 98-02 Z28? Regardless, mufflers are really the last thing to put your attention to in the exhaust system when seeking real horsepower. Find something that sounds good and bolt/weld it on.

you have to make a choice there is no proformance muffler that is also quiet its a trade of. unless you put some type of glass pack in your mid pipe and a mid level muffler on the end mabey that would hush it up a little

Thats what I did with mine. It works, and gives a quiet exhaust when cruising. Obviously at higher throttle levels, nothing that flows well is quiet, but at PT its quiet enough that it doesnt bother the neighbors. If your going for full flow, I found going to a single outlet and getting as much muffler under the car as possible gets the sound down as you have a lot of muffler volume to dissipate the sound and pressure pulses and not a lot of pipe for the sound to escape and resonate in.Originally Posted by Red 87 GTA

The engine is an SFI'd goodwrench 350 with trickflow 195 heads, compcams XE256 4x4 retro-roller, and single plane edelbrock victor-EFI intake w/1000 CFM TB, with control provided by a 98 vortec PCM.
Gets a bit louder at WOT, especially outside the car

But at part throttle, its reasonably quiet. Not like stock, but enough muffling that you can have a conversation without difficulty.

I think the biggest thing when trying to quiet the engine down is getting a large volume muffler, and avoiding things like flowmaster 40's that resonate. The current muffler there is basically just a perforated stainless steel tube with batting around it, but its more than 2 feet long. If you wont be running a cat, you could also put a smaller resonator type muffler in its place to provide additional sound control. So long as its open inside, it wont restrict the flow. I was thinking of adding a third resonator in place of where the cat is to see if I cant get a little more sound control. Large internal volume in the mufflers is key to dissipating the sound.

Why is everyone under the impression that there are certain mufflers that restrict flow so much? Its too far back in the system to really have an effect! The exhaust gas is already cold and slow by the time it reaches the muffler. Run a bone stock car on a dyno then hack the muffler off and run it. I guarantee there won't be a whole lot gained. Its all about sound!

They are the cats ***, if you want to sneak around this is the way to go.
Toss those dronemasters in the trash.
Bigger case muffler will almost always be quieter doesnt mean they dont flow either. Will have a pair going on mine soon, car is stupid loud even with a full exhaust and turbos, no fun when everyone hears you coming.
Let the posers and drive thru heroes do that.
Never let them hear you coming.

My vote for quite goes to the Dynomax super turbo setup.
I looked at a lot of exhausts with 3 main criteria in mind
1) good flowing characteristics
2) if possible stay under 90 dB with headers (anything louder then 90 dB is not allowed to drive on the Nurburgring without being in an official race)
3) have at least some form of corrosion restriction
The super turbo seemed to best fit the criteria. Itīs a bit lower sounding then the stock exhaust, but about as quiet. It resonates a bit under load at low rpms, but is fairly unimpressive when accelerating.
If you do not have a cat, a 2nd muffler helps in the location where the cat wouldīve been. In Switzerland cars must have these, and it reduces the sound level by another 5 dB.
